In some movies and tv series, I often see a house with basement. Here is the Philippines, I guess basement facility in houses is quite rare. Our house does not have a basement. However, given a chance to have a new house, my husband and I are planning to have a basement for storage purposes.

In the UK this is often called a cellar, though shops and houses which have a below-ground floor, especially if it is used for business or living purposes do call them a basement. I guess that the difference between 'basement' and 'cellar' is that a basement is used for living or working whereas a cellar is only used for storage.
Usually you find them here only in older houses and only where the soil is dryish and amenable to building space below ground. These days, however, it's possible to make them watertight and some modern buildings have basements simply because it saves space above ground and it can be more easily kept at an even temperature in both hot and cold weather.
