When Pets Get Old...

My dog is thirteen and although she is still enjoying life she is starting to slow down and has some health issues which I think will eventually get worse. I keep having to stop myself thinking about how long she might have left and what will happen in the future. I have had lots of dogs and every single one has reached a point of illness where it was kinder to euthanize the animal. It's not a nice thing to have to go through although I realize it's best for the dog. How do other people cope when pets get old?

I guess most find it really hard. I think it helps to remember that this is the ultimate kind deed you can do when the pet no longer has a decent quality of life. Anything less is being unkind. Always put the animal first when making this decision. The owner doesn't really count.

All we can do is to keep them as healthy and happy as possible, for as long as possible.

That's the saddest part about having a pet...
