This is one of my favorite fruits.... Have you ever tried this? The rambutan is a medium-sized tropical tree in the family Sapindaceae. The name also refers to the edible fruit produced by this tree. The rambutan is native to the Malay-Indonesian region, and other regions of tropical Southeast Asia.....(wiki)

Oh, so that's what they look like on the tree! The grocery store down the street started carrying them sometime last year, and we bought quite a few of them. I thought they were pretty good, and the kids loved them. A lot of work to prepare compared to the fruits we usually get, though, so I haven't bought any recently. The kids were on a berry kick last week so we ended up with tons of blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries while they were on sale.

They never tell when you buy rambutans if the fruit is attached to the seed or not. When it is not attached, they are quite easy to prepare.

@yukimori It is a cultivar thing, and I hope that they will develop cultivars with the seed not attached, like they did for peaches.

@topffer Yeah, that was the part I've had trouble with. I've never seen them sold with the fruit not attached to the seed. Maybe that's a regional thing.

I bought some this week, from French Guyana. It looks like a hairy litchi, but it does not taste the same. I like both litchis and rambutans.

Huh, the produce guys at the store I bought them from said that they were really similar in flavor to lychees... I thought they tasted kind of similar to the lychee gummy candies Kasugai make, but I've never had a fresh one before so I wasn't sure.

@yukimori They are less aromatic than lychees, and are tasting a bit more like grape.

Yes, it's a common fruit here in our country. It's really sweet and can be bland or sour at times. The only thing that bothers me is its skin. I find it exhausting opening it at times.
