A Boating Regatta with No Water

Today's photo shows Heavitree Gap, at the southern end of the town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, Australia. On the left is the dry river-bed of the Todd River. I've taken the photo out the window of our vehicle and out of sight on the right but left of the big granite hill is the railway. One well-placed bomb would stop all traffic in or out of the city. The Todd River begins in the MacDonnell Ranges and flows eventually, as a tributary of the Hale River, into Lake Eyre in South Australia. However it has zero to low flow over 95% of the year. Heavy rain to the north of Alice Springs results in water flowing through the town around 6 to 8 hours later. The leading edge of the water moves at a walking pace down the river bed. People have been drowned through camping in the river bed then being caught by rising flood waters. Annually since 1961 the Henley-on-Todd Regatta has been held on the river and draws up to 20,000 spectators. Bottomless boats are used and crews stand in the boats, pick them up and run down the course. Occasionally the regatta has to be cancelled because there is too much water in the river. Insurance is taken out against too much water. Various sites and trees along the river are sacred to the indigenous Arrernte people who know the river as Lhere Mparntwe. Interestingly, at the local supermarket we were served by a very dark young man whose name-tag read 'Lhere'.

You really do come up with the most fascinating stories! I never heard of such a boat race with no water, but obviously it can be done! Good job!

Thanks. There is also a yacht club that has its headquarters on a huge salt lake. They race on the salt and have wheels on their yachts as there is never any water.

I love the idea of carrying the boats in a race. This sounds like the type of boat race that Fred Flintstone and Barny Rubble would be great at.

I cannot imagine people running with their boats on their heads, this is surely the funniest regatta I have heard about.

I don't think they put them on their heads but the boats have no bottoms. They step inside and carry them like a skirt.

@Jessicalynnt If it is moving at a walking pace then I guess it wouldn't make much noise. I know in some rivers it comes in a great rush and with a lot of noise.

It is amazing how quickly the water can come down and I guess it could be pretty silent when it comes.

That's an interesting boating regatta. It must be an exciting day with so many people taking part. Very nice picture. Hard to believe it's a dry riverbed.

The river-bed, road and railway are all right next to each other. When the river floods I would think the road and railway would both go under too.

That is such an odd thing in nature how it will be dry 95% of the time yet drowned people at other times with flash flooding.

I guess there is a vast area behind it which feeds into tributaries when then feed into the main river. It does seem surprising though.

that 'tis most interestin', that young fella's name, perhaps he t'was named 'fter that river? i'd the need to giggle't folks usin' bottomless boats - got the visual'n my lil head :) that river bottom sounds like the arroyos 'round these parts. folks falsely think that there's no rain'n sight 'n've drowned :( not givin' much thought where the waters actually come from.

I'm sure he was named after the river. We remarked to each other on the unusual name but the indigenous people often use quite different names. It wasn't till later we discovered the connection.
