I took seven year old A home from school today. She had lines to learn for the school play. They are doing the film "Scrooge." She was most surprised to hear that it is a story written by a writer and that a lot of other films were once books. Charles Dickens eat your heart out!

It is also sad. There is a wealth of language in books that is hidden in a film and imagination is stifled.

@Jackalyn All the classrooms I go into are full of books, no reason for the wealth of language to be lost.

Sometimes I get sad whinking about the several books that will get lost during this generation. I donĀ“t think many girls have read Little Women or The little house books.

You wonder though if they will ever learn it or if they will just miss out.

There is too much classroom time on politics and rewriting history rather learning the basics. I just read a study showing that college students, yes college, don't know who Teddy Roosevelt was, don't know when the Civil War happened, are vague about WWII etc.

Rewriting history? Do elaborate!

This doesn't surprise me. I think many people today are first aware of stories through films.

I guess so, but surely the schools should tell the children the book exists and the film is based on the book?

Sigh. I had a CLUELESS checker at Toys R Us today. I'll rant later. I played Marley's Ghost in Scrooge, or A Christmas Carrol, in 4th or 5th Grade.

Well at least you taught that to her and it will be something that she will always remember. She will also share it with all the other children when she sees the again.
