Fake News

Canada

A good friend of mine on Facebook who is a doctor, a smart, educated woman.... but she was fooled by Facebook. She shared a post that was outrageous and I immediately fact checked it and it was an out-right lie. I sent her a PM and sent her the link and her post was gone in a minute. No one wants to tell a lie on line. From that day on I never shared another post without checking it first. Fact Checking is easy and if you google “fact checking” you will see a lot of them listed. If you haven't used one give it a try, my favorite for years has been snoops.com but with all the trash being shared during the election they couldn't keep up so I tried a few more...Snopes is still my favorite but if they don't have the answer I look else ware. People tend to believe what they see. With all the crazies out pushing their own idea of truth or making their lies look like truth, I don't believe much unless its attached to a truthful name like NBC, ABC, CBS. and a few more... The election is over. Some still think Hillary will replace Trump...If only that could happen... Did you fall for a fake news and share garbage thinking it was real? I'm pretty sure I did but hate to admit it.
No, Pope Francis didn't endorse Donald Trump. And no, Trump didn't beat Hillary Clinton in the popular vote. But how to tell what's real or fake?

I don't believe anything on the net until I have seen it on another source. As they say on Discworld, a lie can be halfway around the world before the truth has got its boots on. While not deliberate lies, I think the principle is the same.

I agree, its too easy to spread rumors and untruth, so many (me included) have no idea if it's fake or real. @Ronrybs

@DeborahDiane when I was searching fake news there are website you can sign up with and they will pay you for your fake news...Just sitting there on a search page offering money for lies - there must be something wrong with that???

Fact checking is so important. I am so concerned about the established journals losing readers and people convincing themselves they are getting the "real" news by doing their own "research" online. Though each news outlet may have some bias, they hire real journalists who have training on how to cover a story. I hate to see them losing readers.

@paigea - Yes, people are writing whatever they want, whether it is true or not. Because of the internet, they can find sites where they can publish anything. It actually horrifies me, because the standards have become so low.

@paigea - I agree completely that fake news is causing real journals to lose readers. It also causes people to buy dangerous products, can manipulate the stock market, affect elections and do a lot of other harm.

@DeborahDiane I find it very concerning. In Alberta we had a big controversy when the Legislature did not allow a right wing journalist into the press box. He has no journalism training and in the end had to be allowed in; he has published a paper in the past and now has an online news site. I find it disturbing that any one can declare themself a journalist.

@Madshadi - You are smart to only use reputable sources and then to still maintain a healthy amount of skepticism about what you read.

@Morleyhunt - Feeling that any news is suspect is better than being so gullible you believe everything you read!

Its so important to fact check it if its important to you. I trust the ABC Nightly news and just hope they are truthful. @Morleyhunt I do not trust the news on Facebook - most of it is fake...but they are working to stop fake news.

I do share news if I know its real. I'm actually going to do a discussion here on a video I just saw on FB later today. My reason for going to FB to begin with was to stay in touch with my children who all live away from our town. I also used the messenger to send messages to them and we can have a free conversation. Now we are all Apple people and I don't need FB but I'm hooked..

I always go by the old saying: Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see. Snopes.com is indeed the best place to check when reading something online for the first time. I had someone tell me some pretty far fetched news that she read on the internet and believed it to be true. I pointed out to her that she shouldn't believe all she reads on the internet. There was no changing her mind. She spends hours reading this garbage.

Sadly lots of people believe if its on the news or on the internet its true. During the Obama Election I was visiting my brother and his wife, they watched nothing but Fox, I had never watched (and never will) it before and couldn't imagine believing that crap. I went to my brother's computer and proved what they were saying was crap but no, I was wrong and Fox was telling the truth to them...

I try and not share anything on facebook for this reason. You just never know if something is real or not unless you research and some people just don't take the time to do it or don't know to do it.

I just avoid all the news altogether, and that way I don't have to determine if it is real or fake! lol ...now if it were only that easy! Unfortunately, we're surrounded by news no matter which way we turn. I will usually try to fact-check on sites like scopes.com before I accept a story as factual.

I read a lot that I just know it can't be true but if I am going to share it with the world, I do fact check. It would be a crazy week if all the news stopped...we would be so curious about what is going on in the world. Can't imagine anymore not having news on our fingertips. While camping we are out of touch but if horrible weather is coming the rangers walk the camp and lets people know - but never "news" unless we ask...

@PainsOnSlate Our local town's FB page had a post asking for help finding a dog and a litter of pups. The person was 'sharing' it. But apparently the theft had happened somewhere in America two years ago. Why don't they check this stuff before sending it on?

I agree and I disliked Trump enough to believe a lot that was being said, now I fact check what is important to me but I don't bother reading about Trump because I think he is going to be a lousy president....Maybe in 4 years I will have to eat my words, but I truly doubt it..

I like the night news with ABC, FOX has been lying through their teeth since they started. I banned them from my TV when Obama was running...this year I never saw one of their lies...thankfully. But I was surprised to see most news people twist their news, very disappointing. I don't watch the Daily Show but I've seen some great videos on FB from them.
