A Thief Behind The Door

While I was preparing the dinner, I heard the wind blow outside.
I opened the door to check if the bowl with the cat food was securely fixed.
I was surprised to see something in the bowl that looked like a round river rock. I also heard weird "crunchy" sounds coming from that dark corner.
I turned on the outside light and the "rock" was in fact a cute baby hedgehog.
His little black nose moved up and down while he was chomping on the cat food.
I had a laugh thinking that I had caught a thief, but I gently closed the door not to scare the little rascal.
Do you have animal thieves that come to steal your pets food?

It is very nice to you. I had a hedgehog in my garden when I was living in the countryside and it was very friendly. If you see it again, you should offer it a home for winter, as a young hedgehog which is not yet hibernating, will not be able to survive. They like dry cat or dog food. You can put it in a cardboard box with food and water in a place with at least 10°C. A garage is OK, if it is at home, you should start by giving it a bath in a sink with a shampoo for babies : hedgehogs have often fleas. It will be grateful for that and very useful in your garden when you will release it next spring.

@LadyDuck It is good if it has found a place to hide for winter. Bringing it food and water is a very good move : if it is has not hibernated, it is because it was not fat enough in September/October. I was bathing mine every month because it was half of the time in a veranda, and I did not wanted it to give fleas to my cat who was also often there. It was liking to swim in the sink. Take gloves.

I know where he hides, inside our garden storage. There is a lot of stuff inside and I have a basked with some rugs inside. I have put a bowl of water inside and I will bring a bowl of dry cat food too, today is very cold. I know that those poor little animals often have fleas, I will try to get it and give it a bath.

We all put food outside, the cats are not kept inside here, all my neighbors have cats and they put the food outside. I used to put a bowl of milk with bread to attract the hedgehogs in the garden. They are the best to kill the small snakes and I hate the snakes.

LOL! That's a cute little feller, Anna! I would have been careful not to scare him away, too!
Pretty and I don't have any outside pets and the only inside pets we have are the fish, snails and ghost shrimp in our aquarium. (We recently lost Ugly Fish. She passed away.) Since I just put out fish food, I can't say that I've ever caught a strange fish in our tanks eating the food I put out for our fish... If I ever do notice a stranger fish eating our fish foods, I'll be sure to tell you about it!
That would be quite the story! LOL!

@LadyDuck When people go past our house walking their dogs, they sometimes invite us to walk with them. I always tell them that I would love to walk with them, but I still can't get any of my fish to walk fast enough to keep up with the other pets and their owners! LMAO!

What a little cutie! I'm glad you were kind enough to let him eat Willy's food. We have squirrels that try to eat the bird food, but I believe we've outsmarted them. Otherwise, the only thing that gets eaten here are my plants and flowers by the deer.

@LadyDuck We had mice in our RV in the winter. We didn't use the RV for a month or two and when we went out to check on it there was mouse poop all over and they ate wires for our electric Everything was shut off so none of them got fried. It was a pain in the neck trying to get rid of them.

We don't have pets, but we do have a huge black walnut tree in our back yard, the squirrels love those nuts. They are also the only critter I have seen who can actually open them. The like to sit on our picnic table, it's like a squirrel restaurant.

I have prepared a place inside our garden storage, I have seen it going inside. I have prepared a basket inside a box with straw inside. I have put water and food inside the garden house, so the baby has not to run around. If I see it outside, I put on a pain of gloves and I bring him inside.

@MALUSE I have followed it last night. After eating the cat food, it has moved into the garden of my neighbor and entered into the tortoises house. The neighbor have placed plenty of straw inside and covered the house with branches to keep it warm for the winter. It seems he likes more to stay there than inside our garden shack.

We have a stray cat coming and helping herself to our cat's dinner. Gremlin, our cat, sits and swears at her, but otherwise does little to interfere. The other day after some heavy rain, I went to check on Gremlin in the enclosure, and the stray cat sprung from the bushes next to the house and ran away as if the devil were after her.

@LadyDuck Nor is Gremlin. He gets his food in the enclosure. Overnight he's the only one who has access to it. During the day, he gets out and the stray cat makes her way over. As long as she stay a certain distance from him, he's okay. She doesn't seem aggressive, which is good. I'm not crazy about the calling cards on the front lawn, though.

Very cute thief! No, we have 'pot hong' dogs (local breed) that are ferocious and guard from every area. No animal can sneak in.

@LadyDuck Indeed. once a kitten ...well, full grown cat, and they killed her. So, so sad. We get a lot of iguana, maincou and birds and the dogs are frantic. There is no stopping them if you cross the boundary. The know where the boundary ends...even though the place is wired around.
