Way back when (about two and a half months ago) the great music geek @teamfreak16 got the idea to do a series of discussions centered around song titles that had "girl" in the title. I joined in, and from there I did boy songs, woman songs, man songs, and Man & woman songs. This is the final entry of the series.
#1: Man Smart, Woman Smarter - Robert Palmer
Back before he started singing with the robotic bimbos Robert Palmer was almost an unofficial member of Little Feat. The members of Little Feat appeared on his first three albums, and he did a number of songs that were either Little Feat songs or co-written with a member of the great band. He was always suave and handsome in my opinon, and he really deserved more popularity than things like "Addicted to Love." But then, my favorite Robert Palmer song is "Best of Both Worlds," and that's far, far removed from the megahit sound-wise.
Here he did something he was great at doing: covering a song and making it his own. This song, a calypso/reggae song dating back to the early 1940s, was given a soulful treatment as only Robert Palmer could. And it's quite funny, too, with the verse about the young man crying over the fact that "he can't do what the big boys do," and an old man "sat down and he cried, too."
Palmer died in 2003 at the very young age of 54 of cardiac arrest. He left a legacy of terrific music that solidified his place in rock and soul history.
Thanks for reading.

Robert Palmer had exquisite taste when it came to covers. I loved him. I was lucky I got to see him at Red Rocks.
