There's a Fire in the Neighbourhood

It sounds like we're living next to an airfield at the moment. Planes are circling and coming and going directly over the house. A fire has started not too far away. Vince drove off to find out exactly where it is and it is a few miles away and burning away from us so that is good. It is still a bit scary to have planes buzzing around everywhere.
We will be keeping up to date on a Fire And Emergency Services website but hopefully with the water-bombers buzzing around we'll be safe as houses – so to speak. Much safer than the poor people in America who are being evacuated.

@JudyEv well not in the past year here in my area - I was robbed twice in a matter of 3 months in a home I have lived for more than 33 years - I felt very violated. This is my home, I would think its my safe haven - but I dont ponder on the problem - it seems its a problem everywhere in the world - thieves will be thieves

@JudyEv You might want to rent a mini trailer and fill it with some valuables and hitch it to the back of your car; just in case.

@nanette64 We have a trailer and we can always fill our motor-home if there is time.

I hope all is well by now. I visited Gatlinburg, TN last summer and so glad i did as there have been fires throughout the area. No doubt the attractions and stores that burned will be better than ever but the loss of so much forest will be felt for many years. I'm glad to have seen it before it all burned away.

@Jeanniemaries Our gums seem remarkably resilient. They will resprout all along each branch and be green again in almost no time.

@JudyEv Yes, here in Florida there was a vacant lot that burned that I pass every day. All the underbrush burned and the trees were blackened but didn't die. The fire was out pretty quickly. In a few weeks that underbrush had grown back and hid the blackened trunks of the palms. I was shocked at how quickly it recovered. I think when large trees are burned up though, it takes longer to recover.

The photo looks like quite a fire. I often hear of fires in Australia just like what happens in America, all the time. Good its all under control and you are 'safe as houses' (lol)

Still a bit scary anyway. Howeverbit sounds like thr fire service is handling it. We had a fire on a farm here or rather in a van on a farm some monghs ago. That generated a lot of activity and closed the one and only main road to the village for hours.

It is bad if there is only one entry/exit to anywhere. We are supposed to think about whether we'd stay and defend or whether we'd leave. We have two exits; one either end of our 18 acres but some of the smallholdings here only have one access point.

A few years ago, we were evacuated for 18 hours because of a fire. Not fun.

I can imagine. All the authorites here seem sh*t scared of fires getting away. We've certainly had some catastrophic ones over the last few years but now, if the forecast is for high heat and strong winds, they call 'catastrophic conditions' which strictly means you should evacuate even if there is no fire around. Luckily everyone ignores it. It's different if there is a fire of course but how is a whole town and locality supposed to evacuate? Where are they supposed to go for the day?

@teamfreak16 When there is a big fire there is always a place allocated for people to go to. But what is the point of leaving if there isn't even a fire? The looters would have a field day.

@JudyEv - The Red Cross turned a high school gym into a shelter for us.

Thanks. It's all over now and the fire has been mopped up so it's all good. Thanks for your concern.

Yes, those fires in Tennessee are really scary. I hope that the fire keeps burning away from you!
