So excited about these Advent Calendars

When I was young my mother would sometimes buy my sister and I advent calendars. I have never bought one for my children before.
Last year I found them on sale after Christmas for 50 cents. I bought two of them and packed them away to bring out this season.
Today was the day to open the door to December 1. My son wasn't as excited this as I was as he knew inside is only chocolate.
The first piece of chocolate was in the shape of an angel. My son handed it to me to eat after he looked at it.
It was not good chocolate at all. It tastes like that junky chocolate that most chocolate bunnies are made out of at Easter.
Well that was a bit disappointing. I am going to go start a cool project that I will share with you all when I am finished.
I attached a photo of my sons advent calendar after he opened door 1.

@LadyDuck I like chocolate but I never noticed them. I will look if I can find one.
I am not surprised to have never received one as a gift when I was a child. My parents were keeping me away of sugar, and it is a dentist who offered me my first candy when I was 6. I asked my mother what it was, and she told me that it was a game. I found what it was by myself. The next time I went to the dentist, he offered me another candy. I forgot to tell "Thank you" and my mother said : "What do you say ?" And I said : "Please, remove the paper, sir doctor."

I also never had this when I grew up nor did I have it for my children. I do remember my mom making rings (out of construction paper) and we took turns tearing a ring off. When I was a child we didn't get things all through the year, only on special occasions. Birthdays, Christmas, Easter and even Halloween were times to look forward too. I'm not saying that kids don't get excited now, but I don't think they have the same excitement as when I was a child. It's possible the candy tasted worse because it was old too.
Have a Merry Christmas!

The chocolate doesn't look old. When it is old it gets a white coating on it. This looked fine and tasted like all the other cheap chocolate I've had in the past... as in gross haha.
My mother always made chains with us as well that we tore off each day until the morning of Christmas. I did that a few times with my children when they ere younger. Like you my mother did it with us for all holidays with corisponding colors of construction paper.

@shaggin I remember the paper chains we use to do them in school in red and green. I miss them.

So sorry to hear the chocolate was gross. I never done these either. I just thought of something that would be cool one made with a amazon gift card in every day in different amounts.

That would be neat but pretty costly I would think. Todays candy shape was a ducky.

So you had the same experience I did the cheap yucky chocolate. I won't buy my kids one again but maybe I will make one.

I used to love them when I was a kid, I haven't had it in years though so don't know if I would like it now. Lol

They have so many different kinds now as well as adult themed ones that are quite costly.

We never had advent calendars and I didn't really know what they were until later in life.

According to the back of the package they have been around since 1851. I should look up more of their history as I love learning how things originated.
