Autism and Obsessions

December 2, 2016 2:19pm CST
My oldest child has Aspergers Syndrom. He is very obsessive about his favorite things. He loves washing machines, and birds. That is pretty much all he talks about, and he talks about it constantly. He likes to do all of the laundry, because he loves the washer so much, and he gets upset when anybody else uses it. He likes to put his ear up to it while it is running, and to lay on the floor next to it trying to look at the bottom. He is obsessed with bird behavior and training. So much so, that he imitates the bird all the time. It's a bit strange to watch your child "preen his feathers". Does anybody here have, or know someone who has autism? What are their favorite obsessions?

I know an adult with Aspbergers who is a real fan of gadgets. Cofeepots are one of the things he goes for. He also loves coats.

I have Asperger's and my son's autistic (not sure how his functioning level since he's only 4), I haven't really noticed many obsessions with him or anything different than any other 4 years old. He does love his Ninja turtles and has a fascination with water, but it's not really an obsession. I on the other hand. I remember being his age and still now with this huge obsession with mummies. My obsessions go between writing, music, mummies and cats. :)

My son has Aspergers. His favorite thing to do and talk about is making paper creations- birds, boomerangs, airplanes, poppers, etc... He loves that stuff. He wants to be an architect once he's grown and I hope he sticks to that goal. =) He is super smart, especially at reading and spelling. He taught himself to read at 3 years old!

We know several people with Aspergers but I don't know what their particular obsessions are. I guess it's nice to have help with the laundry.

My nephew has autism and he really like puzzles and phonebooks or anything with numbers. He could look at a clock for hours and be intrigued by the numbers. He is a big sweetheart.

Yes I have worked with Aspergers Syndrome and Autism for 18 years as a carer....Aspergers a mild form of autism. Most have obsessions of anything really. One had obsessions of lifts and his father took his son to as many tall buildings in New York going up and down lifts/elevators. But quite a few have obsessions with computers and they know their stuff so very well. There are two of the most famous people on the planet.... .Albert Einstein and Bill Gates both Aspergers Syndrome. They are difficult to understand but in time once you get to know them fine but some can go off the rails a bit but that the way they are and back to their normal self. In time through the right education and social skills they get better when they become adults. Some will live in cottages/ residential settings and have support staff to help in their daily lives. Some will lead normal lives. I can give you a lists of obsessions and the list is long.
