Turnip was a vegetable that we always ate raw when I was growing up. At least I thought that we were eating turnips, but apparently they were rutabaga. I didn't believe it until hubby pointed them out to me in the supermarket and indeed... they are different! Now there is more than just appearance that I'm talking about here. Our "turnips" here in Manitoba taste so different from the "turnips" that I remember and I have a feeling that it the fact that they were waxed. They don't do that in Manitoba and the flavor is really harsh. I think that this is going to be a veggie that I can just cross off our shopping list. None of us are all that fond of rutabagas!! Sad, because I used to love them!!

I have them really confused now. What I thought was turnip was smaller and red in color. That's not what they were supposed to look like!!

I only ever use turnip in stews. Other then that I don't really care for it. As children we would eat it raw.

We only ever used (what we called) turnip in soups and stews. It's not that popular here. I don't know if we have rutabaga or not.
