Hello all, today I helped out Max with the reinstallation of the kitchen 'petchka'. probably not the correct spelling but that's what it sounds like. Man that thing is heavy but with the current temperature of minus 10c it is worth it's weight lol. This one is really old fashioned, no idea what year but I think it's safe to say it must have been in the former communist times here in Bulgaria. It fair punches out the heat. For anyone unfamiliar with Bulgaria it's hot in the summer and freezing in the winter, so the petchka get taken out when not in use. Cleaned and put away. Cooking in the summer is done outdoors a lot. On a grill thing called a 'skara'. I cook on top of the petchka, scones, toast and one pot meals mostly and soup. Bulgarians and me love soup. Even for breakfast. My own petchka has an oven built in unlike this old one, once mastered it becomes an old friend. That takes time though, learning the hot spots from the less hot. A lot of folk don't like the wood ash, too much work for some but I don't mind. What about you guys, any favourite methods or appliances for cooking and heating? Thanks for reading and comments are welcome.

it would be interesting to see the petchka with a built-in oven. i guess how much wood is needed depends on what you're cooking or baking.

yes it does and how big the firebox is, they come in various shapes and sizes. basically the oven is above the firebox. you can also get them with a backbox for heating water for the sink/shower and so on.

I am Bulgarian. I have exactly the same petchka in my village house that is my heritage from my grandgrandfather. Yes, petchka on your photo is from the former communist times here in Bulgaria. You reminded me that I should go to my village house. I wish and I look for time to go there. It is my memories great place.
