Anyone who grew up rockin’ in the 70s knows “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo” which was Rick Derringer’s only hit as a solo artist that I know of. The song reached #23 on Billboard Hot 100. Derringer is a highly regarded guitarist who started in the 60s as a member of The McCoys most famously known for their #1 hit “Hang On Sloopy.” Derringer was a member of Johnny Winter’s band when writing “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo” which he described as blues rock and the band first recorded it in 1970. His solo hit version appeared on his debut album “All American Boy.” Derringer would later join the Edgar Winter Group (Johnny’s brother) and play guitar on tracks for Steely Dan and Alice Cooper. Derringer still performs as a member of Ringo Starr’s all-star band. This clip is Derringer performing his hit with the Edgar Winter Group. That is Edgar on keyboard.

Back in the 80's, he also produced Weird Al Yankovic. Derringer said Al was the most professional musician he had ever worked with. Great song!

You look at Derringer and the dude is a genuine rocker. A real pro with all the session work he did.

I remember Rick Derringer had a hit song in the W W F with the song "Real American" which was used by former wrestler Mike Rotundo and Hulk Hogan as their ring music.

Yes, doing WWF music was something he started doing in the 80s.

@JohnRoberts The funny thing was that I never heard of Rick Derringer before his work with the WWF wrestlers music.
