It's a battle of city versus country! Not really, I'm just contrasting the city and the country only in terms of songs that have "city" or "country" in the title of the song. Having just posted the "city song, it's time to go to the country....this time, quite literally!
#5: Going to the Country - Steve Miller Band
I like a song title that sets itself up like that.
From what I'd consider Steve Miller's first real "clunker" album, Number 5, this song really did blend rock and country. The harmonica player on this song is none other than Country Music Hall of Fame member Charlie McCoy. (I was in the Country Music Hall of Fame last week for the Delmore Brothers presentation and got to see the "Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats" display, and Steve Miller was referenced in the exhibit thanks in part to this song!) Amid that (and fiddle work by another noted country session man, Buddy Spicher) Miller lets loose with a solid rock guitar solo at the end.
On side two of the album Miller sang about going to a different country -- Mexico -- with a song co-written by his one-time bandmate Boz Scaggs. But that's for a different countdown.

Not to be confused with Canned Heat's Going Up the Country.

Steve Miller is pretty diverse. This sounds nothing like "Fly Like an Eagle," which sounds nothing like "Take the Money and Run."
