"How do you know what sex a Shark is"? Male and female sharks are easy to distinguish from birth, due to their external reproductive organs. Male sharks have paired reproductive organs, called claspers, which developed from the inner rim of the pelvic fins. There are websites such www.whaleshark.org That are studying and tracking Whale Sharks and could use our support. To help out all you need to do is determine the sex, take a photo of the left side (see photo) and note the time, date and location then submit the information at http://www.whaleshark.org

The only possible creature that could be interested to know the gender of a shark is likely to be another shark... And I am sure they don't need a website or camera :) Oh, and possibly the odd marine biologist, who also should know how to spot the difference.

@JonathanNash As a scuba diver, were I such, my immediate inclination upon seeing certain species of shark in the vicinity would not be to ascertain whether to address it as Mr or as Miss/Mrs/Ms, but to make sure I remained a scuba diver, with all body parts intact...

I love the way smaller fish travel along under sharks. Swimming with whale sharks is one of the tourist attractions off the coast of Western Australia where we live. And welcome to myLot. :)

@JonathanNash They are such massive things but seem relatively docile. I guess you have swum with them?

As a diver we do try to let websites know when we see them and the best thing is the spots are all different so with the right photo you dont even need to tag them
