~Would It Bother You?~

I'm normally not a superstitious person but I don't know about this...I am pregnant so that could be why it's bothering me at all. I don't know. That's why I'm asking here to see what you all think.
We were needing a crib mattress and someone that didn't need theirs any longer gave us one. That was super nice but here's the hard part. They didn't need it anymore because their baby died of SIDS... on the mattress.
Like I said maybe this wouldn't affect me as much if I wasn't pregnant but I feel weird about using that mattress after finding that out. It makes me incredibly sad, gives me chills thinking about it and I just don't know if I am comfortable using it...
Your thoughts? And don't judge me...

We are not superstitious, but understand what you are feeling. Probably most would not want to use the mattress. Just too sad to think of each time your see it?

I'd feel very uncomfortable using that mattress. If I didn't know I would be fine, but knowing....that changes things.

@LovingMyBabies It is not a matter to be superstitious, but this is something that would make me uncomfortable. Better not to use it.

If it bothers you now, it will bother you more if you put a new baby in it...get rid of it...

If it bothers you, don't accept it. Always trust your gut, especially if you're a mom or mom-to-be. I know it might sound silly to others but mothers know things that others don't. What if that mattress has a chemical that is leaking and you know it subconsciously? Your baby is precious and deserves every protection. Listen to yourself and act accordingly.

@dragon54u Yeah something is really bothering me about it, I just can't get past it. I don't think I would ever feel comfortable letting my little angel sleep on it.

I understand completely, to be honest I don't think I would be able to use it and it's not because of superstition, but because what if the mattress was the problem..
I think that if you have any other options, then you shouldn't use this mattress just for the simple reason that you've got this issue in your head now and I don't think it's worth the worry. If you have no other options, then I'd suggest finding out if the mattress was manufactured to recent sleep safety standards and whether or not there's any damage to it.
I totally understand how you feel.

@mom210 Thank you for your honest answer. =) I don't think I would ever be comfortable using it either... I would constantly be worried and be creeped out by it.

I think I would have those thoughts too, but once I got the bed made up for my baby I don't think it would bother me. But if it is going to give you uneasiness, don't use the mattress. A relaxing night's sleep is something you really need to be there for your family.

Your feelings are very well supported. The best thing that you can do is to get rid of that mattress and go and buy a new one. That will kill the chills

@quantum2020 Yeah, I agree it's a better idea just to get a different one.

I gave birth to a stillborn so I somewhat know what this is like. Can you ask your pastor to come and say a blessing on the mattress, I think bringing God into it will make it all better and that baby is a little angel that will be watching over your little baby.

@BelleStarr I'm sorry, I cannot imagine going through that. =( If we decide we cannot afford a new one in any way that might be the route we take. I'm hoping to be able to get another one so I don't feel sad or worried every night.

I would feel the same way and probably would not use the mattress. It is silly to think that the mattress had anything to do with the SIDS, but it would give me the heebie jeebies.
