My son hates writing but wrote his first poem

One thing I have always loved to do is write. As a kid I wrote poems and stories and every night I wrote in a diary. This lasted until I was about 23 and my babies took up to much of my time and I started writing on sites online instead of in my diary. My son does not have my love of writing. It is very hard for him to put his thoughts to paper. In cyber school he has been learning about poems and for his homework tonight one thing he had to do was write a poem. You would have thought with how he carried on crying for so long that he was being tortured. Finally he got one written and I thought I would share it here. Keep in mind that he turned 9 in mid October. The Present Santa has a present I wonder what it could be It is big and long I don't know what it is so can you tell me? Look up in the snowy sky Look at the reindeer fly by.

What a lovely poem and seems like he is looking forward to Christmas! Remember to give him a great big present! My son is 5 years old and he loves to write. He likes the story of Goldilocks and one day he just wrote out the entire story in his writing book but he has to ask me about each and every word because although he can read well enough, he can't really remember the spelling yet. I'm crossing my fingers that he will make a great writer one day.

It is a great poem for his age. My mum collected all the poems I wrote from the age of 8 till I was a teenager and I still have the book. You never know. Poetry writing could open the floodgates for your son.

@crazyhorseladycx We live in an old house. The furnace makes a loud boom an the vents make noise. It has been cold lately so the furnace has been running a lot more so its creeping him out. I've had grown men scared of the furnace noises.

That is a wonderful poem for a 9 year old! It will get easier the older he gets. Not everyone can write poetry.

He struggles with all writing just trying to put to paper what is in his head. Today was a much easier writing assignment thankfully!

@shaggin I'm so happy that he was able to do that through poetry! Writing is a difficult skill to learn.

I think that is pretty good for a 9-year-old. What a shame it is such hard work for him.

I hate seeing him struggle. A lot of it is he just gets upset thinking he can't do it without even trying. It takes him a long time to calm down but then usually he can do it.

@JudyEv I really hope so. He has extremely poor self esteem I am always trying to build up. I honestly think it is some kind of genetic issue.

@shaggin And each time he has a success, however small, that would be very good for his self-esteem and hopefully help with the next time he gets anxious.

"You would have thought with how he carried on crying for so long that he was being tortured." - you can't help rolling your eyes when kids get overly dramatic. hahaha! he did a good job, though! i remember i was in grade 3 when we learned to write whole sentences in english.

He is very dramatic and always says he can't do it but in the end once he calms down he has done it!
