White Christmas

Sorry if it seems I keep repeating myself. Isn’t it silly when discussing old Christmas musicals I just can’t get away from the song “White Christmas”. It seems to be most everywhere. Well in this holiday movie we see Bing Crosby as Captain Bob Wallace and Private Phil Davis portrayed by Danny Kaye on Christmas Eve in 1944 somewhere in Europe entertaining the 151st division. At this time the troops find out that their beloved commanding officer Major General Thomas F. Waverly played by Dean Jagger is being retired. He delivers a fair well speech and the soldiers give him a fine send off. After the war Wallace and Davis become a nightclub act, working also on radio and eventually becoming producers on Broadway. During this time they go to a nightclub to catch an act by the sisters of the mess sergeant from the war. The sisters are Betty played by Rosemary Clooney and Judy by Vera-Ellen. Anyway as usual in movies like this they all pair up and wind up heading to entertain at an inn in Pine Tree, Vermont. Only problem is that there is no snow so the inn has no guests. What they do discover is that the inn is run by their former commanding officer Major General Thomas F. Waverly. During their stay there the music and dancing is a joy to watch when Wallace and Davis decide to make a show at the inn to bring in customers. Wallace discovers that Waverly has requested to rejoin the army but has been rejected. Well then Wallace decides to secretly invite the 151st Division to the inn to show the Major General that is has not been forgotten and these men still love and honor him. With many different comedic and lovelorn problems thrown in it is a wonderful movie to watch which ends with a Christmas Eve finish of snow finally falling and of course the singing of “White Christmas” at the very end of the show. So in this case I have included a short video of the part in the movie where they honor Waverly. If any of you are interested in seeing this movie it looks like at present it can be seen on YouTube. I know you’ll enjoy it.
