Any Members with Dreadlocks?

We had a house concert here in Donnybrook, Western Australia, the night before last. While some are outside we had planned this one for indoors. We had a lot of cancellations at the last moment. The town of Yabberup which some of you might have heard me speak of before had a major bushfire nearby so ten from that area cancelled. There were also a few others who couldn't attend but it was still a successful night. The singer doesn't eat wheat products and is vegetarian. We are fine with that as long as we know in advance so we can plan meals accordingly. However the lass has her hair pulled to one side in a loose plait which is now a dreadlock. It just puzzles me that she is really into health foods (rice milk, yoghurt, etc) but is happy to have a dreadlock. There is no way her hair can be clean. Anyone care to wade in on this? Am I missing something?

You are not missing anything - I agree, it cant be clean as dreadlocks are expected not to be washed. I have had two exchange students come from Australia - both declared themselves Vegetarians and only drank water, no sodas. We thought it was just their fear of eating SA meat (dont know why) but when the second one arrived from Darwin - she was the same. Luckily their hair was NOT dreadlocked because I might have been inclined to do a DELILAH move on them!

@JudyEv or a good old BRUSH and shampoo - I often feel like that about people I see and meet.

It's probably conforming to some image thing.

@JudyEv that made me think of the 1960s when women had their hair all teased up on top with loads of hairspray and how flies were reported to get caught in there!

@valmnz This was popular in my day but I don't remember any flies getting into hairdos. My friend used to have hers piled right up. I was SO jealous!

Yes, I guess so. They give me the creeps a bit ever since hearing of some guy that had spiders in his dreadlocks.

I haven't seen it before .It is said that this kind of matted coils of hair is popular with Rastafarians.

Yes, that is true. A lot of hippies let their hair become dreadlocks too.

There is no way they can wash them I'm sure.

@JudyEv - I agree. If they do wash them, it could only be on the surface, not deep inside.

I asked someone about that once who has dreadlocks and he said he washes it just like ordinary hair. The difference is that dreadlocks can't be undone unless you cut your hair.

That's good to know. It must take an age to dry.

i guess the only way to wash them would be to just stand under the shower then pat dry with a towel. i don't think there's a way to shampoo it or comb it. i've seen a guy with dreadlocks down to his bottom so he walks with his head bent from the weight.

If you manage to get the locks wet through, they would take ages to dry - probably grow mould!

I feel sure most would have to be cut out. There is no way you could untangle some of the ones I've seen.

She's expressing her individuality, just like everyone else her age. I've been a musician for decades and may finally get my left ear pieced. But I haven't yet.

I have super curly hair and I have no idea why people wants that wadded look, in the picture I had straightened my hair, And that looks like a wad of tangles that has not been washed in months. That nappy mess in that girls hair is something other than dreadlocks, I thought dreadlocks was long braids that people had weaved into their natural hair.

I think they're just dreadlocks in the making. Dreadlocks to me is just hair left to matt itself into what usually looks like ringlets. Whatever - they're gross!

I tried to grow dreadlocks. It didn't work out right for me, but you can wash your hair, but you can't use conditioner or comb or brush it. They just weren't growing evenly for me.

We have known many differeint types of people over the yrs. Many different styles. Some people it may be more their culture, and we have seen a lot of musicians around here who do this. Some of the ones we also see are homeless and have longer hair so easier to keep. I know one who does it all the time, and loves his hair this way. He is a clean freak though so his hair is always clean. He just does it because of his nationality, and because he is a Reggae musician.

How can he possibly keep it clean? And it would take forever to dry.

This is something I cannot stand. Of course the hair cannot be clean. I have seen a young man in a supermarket in Italy with dreadlocks. He was at the butcher section. I decided I would never buy meat there.

Dreads give me the shivers. Yuuuuuuuck! I once read an article where someone had spiders nest in their dreadlocks....and hatch.....and now I feel itchy just thinking about it.
