Fun with Pyrex - and the thrift store

Yesterday I went to the grocery store with a seemingly innocent mission. I needed a casserole dish. Dear Partner wants to make chicken casserole and though we have a Pyrex baking dish it's about fifteen by ten inches and shallow. Good for cooking the carniceria's Magic Marinated Chicken over rice but little else. So I went to the store. The kitchenware selection was usually good. But they had NO deep dishes. Cookie sheets, shallow pyrex, cake pans, griddles, skillets, serving dishes, pie pans... no casserole dishes, no Dutch ovens, nothing over two inches deep. I was all ready to be mad at the store managers, till I went on the Corningware and Pyrex websites. The only things that were remotely like what we wanted were over fifty dollars! I went to Amazon. They always have something. Nope - the only thing close to what I wanted was a vintage piece that still wasn't quite right. But it gave me an idea. I went to the thrift store. What luck - it was half off everything in the store! At first I didn't think I'd find what I was looking for - then I found two beautiful Pyrex dishes, a round one and an oval, that perfectly suited my needs. I also found brand new cake pans at $2.50 apiece after discount, and a new bathroom scale. Brought them home, cleaned out the Pyrex, and it's sparkling new looking. Let's hear it for vintage stuff!

people tend to get pyrex, then never use, then there are people like us, who use and love em!

Ha ha, yeah. I really didn't think of it much before, until I went out looking for these other dishes - now I treasure it. Partly because it brings me the possibility of really tasty casseroles made by the partner. I'm like "so you want to make me chicken and tuna casseroles? And you need pyrex? I WILL FIND YOU PYREX."

@Happy2BeMe When I visit the Victoria, B C area I make a point of checking out their thrift shops. Oh my what they consider ordinary!! I have Bavarian and English beauties bought cheap from there plus the money spent helps charities.

Aw...that is nice. But isn't Pyrex heavy?

Probably compared to more modern materials, but not that bad. Not nearly as heavy as cast iron!

We love glass for everything. No more plastic, please! We just found a wonderful cranberry covered dish at Hospice for $2.00! Will have to share the photo in an article here tomorrow.

@sallypup No, actually a serious one - they had a whole pile of new ones next to the bathroom scales.

Congratulations! What a great find! Last year, JC Penney was having a sale on pyrex and I bought a set of covered bowls for a great deal. And I use those all the time. I got rid of my plastic stuff and have gone back to glass.

It definitely was. I love how they cleaned up to look new, when they are who knows how many years old.

@Rohvannyn You never know what you will find in a thrift shop. I worked in one and found there things I could not find anywhere else that I needed.
