A fascinating event I witnessed in the Ganges

I witnessed the fascinating scene in the river Ganges. While I was on the boat I suddenly heard somebody shouting 'Ah.ah.aaaahaaahh.' . I could not understand what they are shouting at and for? I asked the boatman. He asked me to wait and see Immediately I have seen a number of birds flying and approaching a boat. The people in the boat were shouting and were throwing some food item into the river. The birds were coming near the boat and were catching the food pieces from the surface of the water with great speed.
This was really a great moment to watch. I had no words to describe and was watching it with wide mouth open till the boatman reminded me to catch the moment by clicking my Camera.

The boatman informed me that the birds do come here in every winter to Benaras from Australia.

Wow, were the birds migrating to somewhere? It's a great photo that captures the moment. But the Ganges is a holy river, so we need to expect the unusual too.
These birds seem to be seagulls, and some seagulls can do thousands of kms.
