READ PEOPLE READ! Got honked for not turning right at a red traffic light!

United States

WHY? The sign clearly says "NO TURN ON RED". The sign is there for a reason as it's unsafe to turn right because: 1. It's a main road where the speed limit is faster 2. There is a hidden curve/blind spot so you can't see oncoming cars 3. Must have had an accident prior so that's why there is a sign for our safety Once the light turned green, the driver sped up and that's where my boyfriend slowed down & I yelled NO TURN ON RED ******** with a nice remark at the end! It was nice to get that out of my chest. After being rear ended a few days ago, I'm quite upset. People need to STOP texting, looking into space & not paying attention to their surroundings. When you drive, DRIVE - no texting, no talking on the phone, YOU need to focus, look around, see if there are any bikers, signs, pedestrians and be alert! My vent of the night!

I had the opposite road rage situation today. I was extremely upset about a car in front of me that refused to turn right on red, and sat there the whole time until the light turned green. There was zero oncoming traffic that would have prevented the lady from making her right turn. Yet, she sat there dilly-dallying on her phone or whatever the heck she was doing. If she would have been paying attention, she could have made the turn on red; I could have made the turn on red; and 17 cars behind me could have made the turn on red. Instead, we sat there for 5 minutes all honking our horns at this one clueless lady who obviously had no idea that you can LEGALLY make a right turn on red! Ok, my vent for the day is done! haha

HAHAH we have similar situations expect mine had a sign on the traffic light that said NO TURN ON RED. There is sometimes NO TURN ON RED (and specific times you can/can't) but the incident yesterday was NO TURN ON RED AT ALL. I cannot believe the lady didn't know, or maybe she didn't think the honk was for her! I honked the horn today when I was "not" driving. Reached over and honked the car (4 way stop sign) - its our turn and the car went, we are in the middle already and they stopped.

I have been in your situation. Hysterical honking at a no turn on right stop and even worse when someone is in the crosswalk. I am supposed to mow down a person just because the jerk behind me is in a hurry?

I know what you mean. I hate it when they aren't looking at the bigger picture as to why I'm stopped. Yesterday was because there was a no turn right on red sign. But sometimes there could be someone crossing the street, a biker that is going to go straight that is not going to yield, or something is in the road at the moment! People just think its GREEN, GO, GO GO NOW!

@JohnRoberts , That is indeed hysterical, there are so many who never follow traffic laws.

Just right outside where we live on the Road and its only a narrow one they have allowed an overtaking sign there right where we are supposed to turn into where we live. We now have to have eyes at the back of our heads to get into the gate for the would be speeders coming up behind us and trying to overtake us while we are trying to turn into the Gateway across the other side of the Road I don“t know who allowed it but there are some pretty mad drivers behind us most times.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Yeah it is important for us to check both ways before proceeding. It does not help when the drivers aren't paying attention like you mentioned 'texting'!

Not only is it unsafe, but if caught, that is a hefty ticket! Last year our friend turned on a red - with that sign there, and she got a nice over $500 ticket over it. She was super mad, but realized well enough it was her fault. I hate stupid people who honk like that - especially when you are the one who is right . Oh my gosh, I hope you are ok from your accident!!!

@infatuatedbby I hope you were able to make it to the doctor - at least to have your back checked out. Hopefully the pain goes away very soon! Out here, there is one particular major street that runs aside a railroad track . . . and at every major intersection along it, there are signs saying we cannot turn on a red (towards the tracks). If you do, it's one of the only places I know for sure that takes photos . . . and that flash makes it loud and clear they took a shot of your car. I guess not everyone sees the signs - I see the flashes go off there all the time!

@much2say Thanks!! & the camera spots are mostly taken down because they cause accidents more! Some people are in a rush and they don't even pay attention to the surroundings and want the car infront to go when sometimes the coast isn't clear!

Ouch! That is a hefty ticket definitely. It depends on where the sign is placed. Sometimes you may not see it. There was a time when I was not familiar with the area and the sign says 'no turn on right' on the right side and you wouldn't have seen that if you were the driver! I was the passenger and saw it. My back hurts! I will go to the doctor sometime this week hopefully?

Yes I surely am! I'm still upset about being rear ended so now whenever I see stupid drivers I will voice what I have to say if it involves me! Normally it's my boyfriend which he did too but I yelled like no other. The car didn't even want to be side by side with us anymore

Hi in my area even if it ok to trun right on red the law here says you do not have to right on red.I do not care if they honk at me they just have to wait. If they hit me from behind and I am at a red light I will get the insurance to fix car or get other one. People in my town think if it snowing or rainng they do not have to stop at lights or stop signs. I agree people need to get off the phone the state law says no driving and talking on the phone to.

Red means stop and proceed with caution if there is a no turn on red. But if its not clear, or you don't feel comfortable - then don't proceed. =) Some areas even though its OK to turn red, I won't if it doesn't look safe no matter if cars honk at me. But if the person is not even looking or talking on the phone, yapping and its COMPLETELY clear and I can see for myself, I will honk. But yeah, people need to get off the phone (even if they're on bluetooth, etc) if they can't pay attention to the road.

I believe that most of the accidents occur because of people not paying attention or being busy with something other than watching the road and the surrounding. If you can't pay attention then don't sit behind the wheel. Its as simple as that.

Yes! I ignore them as well. But a few days ago, I was rear ended so now I'm upset! But if only everyone paid attention! My biggest peeve is when it is GREEN and there are pedestrians. The car behind doesn't see and honks!
