Moose Licking Cars

When I was a kid with a horse, there was a salt lick in the pasture and we would see deer all winter licking away...
A warning has gone out lately here in Canada. If you see a moose licking your car it's just licking the salt off your car. The warning is to remember its a wild animal, a huge wild animal and mostly wild and not friendly.
Where I live in Canada you won't see a moose. We are a bit too over populated with humans and homes and cars. But in the farther north and farther west it is a normal sighting.
When camping in the Adirondacks and while visiting my family in Vermont, we hear about the moose but I've never seen one... NY State has moose crossing signs on the highway but that is as close to a moose I've ever been... (photo above)
The video below show some of the animals in western Canada licking people cars. It's fun to watch....
Moose clamouring to lick the salt off vehicles has created an unusual tourist attraction in the Spray Lakes area Subscribe to CTV News to watch more videos: ...

@PainsOnSlate the pipeline sent me to alaska, got me a secretarial job 'n transferred there from louisiana. talk 'bout a culture/temperature shock, lol. drove the whole way, took me 3 weeks :) summer'n alaska 'tis wonderful, yer tempted to ne'er sleep coz ya jest know yer gonna miss somethin'! i'd be winterin' down'n n.y., too. then 'gain, with all the weather changes, parts 'f alaska might be more kind.
i watched'n horror 's those folks hired to work the pipeline destroyed so much, killed so many critters jest coz they 'xisted. 'fter nearly 3 years, i couldn't bare't any longer 'n came back down.

@crazyhorseladycx It sounds like a nice place to work and live but your employees must be crazy to kill for fun...it would be different if it was hunting season (to keep the numbers down to a normal number and if they eat what they kill.) But to kill for fun is not a good thing...

If I were younger i would want to live in Alaska... It welcomed my sister and I this past fall and looked like a great place to live. What sent you to Alaska and how long were you there? A young woman who drove the buses that took us from our ship to our day trips said she drives a bus in NYC but had the opportunity to join the cruise business for the summer so she does both - summer in Alaska and Winter in NY.

Yes it does. It melts the ice and snow and it splashes up on to our cars. We wash it often during the winter to keep the salt off the cars. Our black cars turn white in the winter...

I saw a few moose when we were in Yellowstone National Park, but they were a ways away, I have heard they are quite mean. Cute video.

I've heard they are not friendly or cuddly, I still want to see one someday, while I'm driving by in my car, not while hiking....

I've only ever seen them at zoos. I'd probably be scared to see one in person.

With all the salt they put on the roads during the winter it is no wonder they are licking. I just hope it is real salt not chemical-laced salt.

Cross another item off the list of things I thought I'd never see, A Moose Lick Warning. I've never seen a moose but my wife and youngest son had one cross the road in front of them while they were in New Hampshire near Mount Washington several years ago.

I saw a moose false charge an overzealous photographer once. I think it was in Alberta. I laughed. Camera went flying, and the guy fell on his a r s e, but the moose didn't actually continue the charge. I hope the fella bought himself a telephoto lens for his next birthday.

They are huge, I hope you got to see the video, the ones on the video were young and small compared to an adult. And no they are not as skidish as deer, they move pretty slow unless angry...

We had ice after snow and watched the big salt trucks go by our house a dozen times, It does melt the ice, thankfully, no if I could get it off my driveway.

Glad you liked it! If you are not living with snow, it might be hard to understand.
