Nightshift

So many people around the world carry a working torch on the Night Shift and very little mention is ever made of them. Currently - for the Festive Season one of the South African Service Providers is running an advert that has hit many hearts and is a winner all the way when it comes to GOODWILL to all man. Night-shift by the MTN carrier salutes the men and woman that work all hours of the night while the rest of the world travel and sleep. Filmed on set at most of our International Airports, the people behind the scenes of our Busy Lives are accounted for - and rightfully so. So next time someone says they work the night-shift, take them into consideration as part of that spokes that keep the worlds cogs going. Great song . . . that makes a great advert, that makes a great tribute - Commodores "Nightshift" Marvin . . . "he was a friend of mine And he could sing a song His heart in every line Marvin sang of the joy and pain He opened up our minds And I still can hear him say Aw talk to me so you can see What's going on Say you will sing your songs Forevermore . . ." I absolutely love the mood this song puts me in every time I hear it.

I have some experience of night working, and I used to quite like it.

@Inlemay I used to do 'sitting up'. This involved sitting up all night keeping an eye on pregnant mares through a peephole into their stables - oh-oh, I feel a post coming on! I may write about that some time.

My sister was a Matron in a Big SA Hospital and she said she would take a nightshift over dayshift any day

Thankfully, my timid on the "night shift" was at the post office instead of a 24-hour convenience store. (Don't know which was safer, though, given that was the era of disgruntled postal employees "going postal.") And I love this song.

I used to have to work a week of nights every six weeks. The only carrot was that we had a week off after it to get over it. It was great when I was younger because I did not sleep so much but as I got older I found it harder and harder each time. It really is so unhealthy to work night duty. Hospitals are never quiet places and there is always something to do.

thanks for sharing your stint of nightshifts - so hats off to you too for the time served. It takes a certain kind of person to do a nightshift I think

Good reminder. It is the little people, the unseen, often unacknowledged workers that keep the cogs turning.
