I am no longer alone

It has taken years for me to make up my mind but at the weekend something happened which helped me make the decision. It has been several years since my cat, Sooty, who was 18 years old, left me. I was so much in despair that I decided never again would I have another pet.
Until now...
Last weekend my son and his family adopted a dog who otherwise would have spent his life in kennels and I enquired whether the same association also had cats. I contacted the person involved and discovered that he helps with the upkeep of many abandoned helpless animals including horses. I asked if there was a cat, not a kitten though. looking for a new home and he informed that he did indeed have one... and today Chicca (pronounced Kicker) arrived
She is 16 months old and was in a family with a 4 year old girl and was supposed to play with her but instead she just ran away scared. The mind boggles at what the girl has probably put her through The family decided that to have a cat that didn't play with their daughter was useless and wanted a new home for her so she is now with me
Next week she will be vaccinated and neutered and we hope that we will live happily ever after

She will indeed! I guess I would not have found such a beautiful and quiet, sweet cat if I had decided earlier. There is tight time for everything!

some people think pets are toys or robots that do their bidding and able to take anything.
pets also have personalities. they can be active, docile, independent, etc.
was sooty a gray cat, too?

No, Sooty was totally black. His mother (who was mine too) was grey striped but did not have white feet as Chicca has.
I agree that pets have a character of their own and are definately not toys!

She's adorable, and I'm sure she'll be quite happy living with you where there are no 4 year old children to torment her. I really wish people would learn about animals before bringing them home. Cats aren't really good for playing with children.

Absolutely spot on Sadly too many people think that a cat (or even a dog) will be a great 'toy' for their children. How wrong they are and they usually blame the animal for being 'useless' too

@katsmeow1213 Any form of cruelty to animals is illegal here in Italy including abandoning them. Dogs are micro-chipped and it is easy to trace their owner should they ever become abandoned.

@mysdianait They're absolutely wrong.. and I hate how people will dump off their pets when the pet no longer suits their lifestyle. I think that should be illegal. You wouldn't dump your kid if it were too expensive, or because you had to move, or because you split from your spouse, or whatever... your pets should be treated like your children!

Yes indeed and that is probably why she ran off and was so scared of the child

The letters of the alphabey are pronounced so differently in Italian compared to English, which took me a long time to understand when I was first here.
Gosh! She opens her mouth evey time you take her photo? She looks a big girl. How old is she?

@sishy7 Really? Our pets have a sort of identity card given to them the first time that they go to the vets and that is well before they are a year old as they all go either for vaccines or a micr-chip if they are dogs as that is compulsory here.

@mysdianait No, that was just a one off thing... I didn't know she was going to yawn like that right when I took the photo... A lucky shot by chance, I guess... Yes, she is not a kitty for sure - but honestly, I have no idea how old she is exactly...

Goodness knows why I decided on the spur of the moment to finally have a cat again just when she was looking for a home. Matches are made in heaven they say

@purplealabaster I do too! I have been without a cat for almost 8 years and hesitating for over a year about having another one. Then suddenly, right out of the blue, I decided.... so there has to be a reason why it happened when it happened

@mysdianait I do believe that those kinds of things happen for a reason, and they are just "meant to be".

Well I'm glad Chicca came to a wonderful home and now she gets to play with you! Surely there must have been a reason why she ran away scared from that little girl . . . all it might take is one bad experience. I hope you will both live happily ever after too!!

I guess that combined with the fact that the child was very young (too young for a pet IMO) was also the inconsiderate attitude of the parents who thought it should have been a 'toy' for her
If anything specific upset her, she seems to have forgotten it and doesn't seem scared about anything here. Indeed she even has her own toys which she plays with

@much2say I am so happy that she has settled in so well. It seems like she has always been here and recognises me even when I have friends here.
I guess I should be so grateful that her previous owners no longer wanted her

@mysdianait Sadly I think that happens all too often . . . people get pets without really thinking things through and end up "getting rid" of the poor pet .
Chicca has nothing to worry about now - she definitely found a home where she can feel secure!

I prefer cats as they are not so imposing. I could not be sure that I could walk a dog every day, For example I am unstable if we have snow and if I was sick it would be a problem. Cats are easier to care for It is indeed so different to have a pet again and know that 'someone' is here each time I return home.

@mysdianait It really depends on what kind of dog you get. Fortunately for me, both of my dogs (dachshunds) are pad trained so I don't have to take them out a lot. I agree that cats are a lot easier than dogs. They more or less take care of themselves except for food. My dogs are great company for me. I can no longer work so I am at home alone during the day. I don't feel quite so lonely with them around.

@JudyEv Oh yes. Cats and birds don't really go well together.
I was feeding the birds on my balcony since a couple of years ago but I think I will have to stop now. It would not be fair to either of them.

Your cat looks so calm and relax. You must be very happy now... Is she going to be an indoor cat or outdoor cat?

We are indeed both happy now and getting on like a house on fire too!
She will be an indoor cat because I live in a second floor appartment. She was already an indoor cat in her previous situation and is so clean.. Always uses her potty in the bathroom I have a small baĆ²lcony but she is not interested yet in going out there, probably because it is so cold and she, being a cat, prefers the warm inside.

What a pretty kitty! I'm so glad Chicca found a good home with you! I hope you have many happy years together!
I know some people have grown up with cats since they were little, but it's wrong to expect a cat to be a sort of plaything for a child, and small children need supervision to ensure they are treating the cat (or any pet) properly. I wonder if maybe they didn't want to bother with that. It's a shame, but at least she has a loving home now.

She has been a month this week and she is really fitting in now. She is just as cute as she appears in the picture and I am so happy that I decided to have another cat when she became available-
I absolutely agree that no pet should be considered a toy for children. Quite the opposite, they should be taught to respect a pet. I play with her for a while i the morning and she knows when that time will be. In fact as soon as I have the bed made and the kitchen tidy she seems to know and perches on the edge of the sofa with huge black eyes waiting for me to throw her tennis ball

That child was too young to have a pet in my opinion and certainly not as a toy
She really is sweet and seems not a bit perturbed that she is in a new home at all

I agree @mysdianait
When families already have pets when their children are born those children are usually taught how to behave with their pets, but to buy a pet so a child can play with it is really stupid and the parents probably shouldn't have kids either.
