A poll by the Associated Press shows that out of 5 annoying phrases people use in conversation, people rated "whatever" as the most annoying. The way it is used here it is a dismissive phrase that means the person could care less about what the other person is saying. It is pretty annoying.

Lots of truth to that. Context is everything and words can definitely be overused when used in too many different kinds of situations.

Whenever my husband and I get into a heated discussion, he will mutter "whatever" and walk away. Grrrrrr. It drives me crazy!

For me it's " yea but" my brother uses that one all the time. I know he hasn't heard a word I said he is just waiting for my lips to stop moving. Drives me insane

I think people use it when is is in the fad; or so many people are using it, like the phrase:"at the end of the day," "actually" which I find so annoying and sometimes not fit to be used in a sentence.

Yes people sometimes think trendy phrases make them sound smarter. I use them all the time not for that reason but just because watching tv they tend to stick in my head and are so handy sometimes as a conversation filler. Hope I don't annoy anyone because I probably use them in replies at times. lol

Whatever is on the top of my list. My husband will say it when he isn't really listening to me. This happens when its lawn mowing time, as he doesn't like mowing and we have a small lawn, so it should be easy. I think its our long growing season that causes the dislike, as we have flowers, weeds and grass year round. I think it should be easy, as all the pruning and rose care I deal with year round.

I have seen in my own language how certain words that are used at pet words without giving any extra meaning to the sentence.
