Here now the most popular apples are from Xinjiang because they taste very sweet. And there is a new kind of apples called "ugly apples" are also delicious. The original Fuji apples are indeed sweet and crispy. I'm sure your brother and his family will have a great time eating that box of apples though.

Something healthy is a good gift, apples are cheaper now since we imported from China. During the dictator era, apples and grapes were so expensive only the rich could afford them, they came only from the US.

I never heard of that superstition that apples bring safety. Maybe this New Year we will buy apples and other fruits to bring good luck to the family

I thought you have made a mistake, in Chinese,apple's pronunciation just similar to safety's, not means to stay safe for someone.
