I have to pay $1000 for basically NOTHING!?

I am a bit confused and angry with the local hospital right now. I went in a couple weeks ago to the emergency room for a bad toothache and abcess. I wasn't able to visit a dentist at the time, but the pain was excrutiating and I was afraid the infection would spread. I didn't get taken back to a room and I was told that they didn't know anything about teeth and that I would have to go somwhere else but they could give me a prescription for antibiotics for the infection.
I recieved a bill for over $1000 for this!? I don't understand what exactly I am being charged for. I paid for the antibiotics, and like I said I wasn't even taken back to a room or anything, just told by a lady in the front that I would have to go somewhere else.
I think over $1000 for that little "visit" is obsurd. I want to call about it, but I don't feel it would do any good.
RANT OVER.

Wow that is some Bill just for that kind of attention. Not sure why they have charged that much but I am sure you do have a right to know at least. Can´t you make them send you an Invoice with what its supposed to be all about? Hope they bring that Bill down to a big nothing for you here´s to that.

I would find out at the very least. Because I mean they did not take any good care of you at all. Here dental charges are astronomic but to charge you so much just for nothing is ludicrous. Enough to give you another Toothache. Me unless they gave me a Receipt I would not pay and see where they want to take that.

I am debating whether to let it go or try and fight it. I just don't feel like I would win the battle. It's me against the hospital.

@Angelee_27 Please, at least phone them and demand an explanation.

I agree with Deborah, I think you should ask for a detailed bill. I don't believe they can refuse that request. You will then at least know what the charges are for.

I am sure they wouldn't deny me that, but I just can't imagine what the charges could be, do they charge you for walking in? lol
Also, I just feel like it would be pointless. I don't have any faith that they would be able to do anything if I was to argue the charges. I feel like I should just let it go and take the hit because there is nothing I can do.

@Angelee_27 for that kind of money, I would at least want an explanation. I don't have $1,000. To throw around. Taking the time to complain about it, I would at least find out why. I once received a bill for $23,000. I almost messed myself. I demanded an explanation....it was suddenly a refund if $1,500. Another time I received a bill for $2,500. When I questioned it....it was actually $27.00. Someone, somewhere messed up. In each event, if I had discovered their mistake after paying the bill I would have had a difficult time recovering the overpayment.

I don't have health insurance, so I did expect to have to pay something, as nothing is free. But, $1000 for basically nothing is just crazy. I feel like if I did call and complain or anything it really wouldn't do any good. I feel like they would just say that they can't do anything, those are the correct charges, and that's it. I mean, they would probably offer me some sort of payment plan, but that doesn't help the fact that it's still going to be over $1000.

Sympathizing. I don't think you need to pay so much for your teeth. Maybe something wrong with the hospital?

Especially since they told me they couldn't help me and to go somewhere else. There must be something wrong with them!

Wow, I'm so thankful we have free healthcare over here, that's a lot of money for nothing!
