My first New Year's Eve alone..

A week from today is New Year's Eve. It will be my first New Year's Eve alone in over 16 years. My husband and I spent every NYE together since we rang in 2001.. before that I had other boyfriends during this time that I rang in the New Year with.. But this year I will have no one with me when the clock strikes 12. In fact I may already be in bed by that time... Why you may ask? Because my husband has to work his 2nd job that night, it is mandatory. He's a bouncer at a bar downtown on the weekends. Any typical week he can tell them what nights he does and doesn't want to work, but this holiday is mandatory and I completely understand why.. But it does make me sad that I'll have no plans for the night and no one to be with when the new year rolls in. I don't even have any single friends to hang out with.. all of my friends will most likely be with their own spouses.. What are your plans for next weekend?

This year I will probably sleep early. He wants me to go hang out at the bar where he'll be working so we can at least be together at midnight like we always are, but I'd have to find someone to go with me and I don't know anyone that is free that night.

@PainsOnSlate No taxi, it's half an hour away. I'd just ride with him.. he won't drink as he's working.

@katsmeow1213 A taxi could get you there and back, if he's working a bar, it would be a fun place to be with him...

I hope he gets some big time holiday pay for working that night! We actually haven't thought of any plans yet . We usually have a New Year's Day get together with my family as a traditional Japanese thing. But as for the Eve, I think for the past decade Hubby and I have snoozed through New Year's Eve .

No he does not get extra pay.. this is just his 2nd part-time job that he only does a couple days a week.

@katsmeow1213 Aw, really? I thought he would - at least something for the sacrifice he's making as it's a "big night". How long does he have to be there for that shift?

@much2say Till about 3 in the morning. The reason he has to work is because it's a big night.. he works as a bouncer at a bar.

I used to be like that every year until I met my current boyfriend. We spend new years eve together every year but sometimes we don't because it's also his dads birthday and some years his dad just likes it to be with family and no one else. Not sure this year plans i may be by myself again but who knows.

We've never made much of New Year's Eve, even when we were young.

Oh wow, that would indeed be a break of the sweet 'tradition' the two of you have been having since 2001... I hope you'll still be able to make the best of the situation... I'll probably on here at midnight on NYE...

That is sad not ringing in the New Year together. But at least he'll make some extra money. I could live with that. It became a tradition here to have friends for cocktails, go to dinner at a restaurant, back here for dessert, watch fireworks from the lanai, watch the ball drop, and usher everyone out so we could get some sleep.

That sounds nice, I wouldn't mind hanging out with friends. He has the second job to help pay for his car, so it's not like it's extra money. He got a newer car that is $150 more a month than his old car. He really wanted it and we fought over it for a couple months before I finally told him that if he got a 2nd job he could have the car.

@DianneN Oh yeah.. he's horrible! Always has to be the latest and greatest.. his car isn't even brand new, it's a 2011, but it's a special limited edition kind of Charger... ugh!

@katsmeow1213 I'll probably eat pizza & ice cream (despite the winter cold) and watch a movie. This was our traditional NYE with my son when he was little. I always felt like he was the best NYE "date" I could have. He's been gone 8 years now. Late night parties & over indulgence in libations are long ago in my past. These holidays are now days to remember & reflect - time well spent perhaps
