A Lesson Learned

My sons both like their beer. Thankfully they don't drink it every day and that's a good thing. A friend of my younger son, I'll call him John, was home for Christmas. He likes to drink. My son went out to a bar with him 2 days before Christmas. Everyone got home safely that night. But that is certainly not the end of the story. The next night John called again asking my son to go out to the bars with him for the 2nd night in a row. My son declined which at the time we didn't know was a good decision. John ended up going out with his much older brother in law. They went to a bar about 4 miles from home. At approximately 12:30 am they were both drunk and decided it was time to go home. At this point it was now Christmas. Apparently John was less drunk than his brother in law, how they decided this is beyond me, so John drove his brother in laws truck home from the bar. About a quarter mile from my home and about 2 miles from John's home they had a pretty bad accident. John was driving and realized he was starting to go off the road, over corrected and ended up crashing into 2 trees. This is all what John told my son a couple of days later. The air bags went off but John still sustained a very bad cut on his forehead. He was bleeding pretty good. His brother in law who was not belted apparently was knocked unconscious and as was discovered a bit later had his pelvic bone broken. John tried to wake his brother in law up to no avail. He then tried to call the police several times but his call kept getting dropped. So John panicked and took off to find some help. I'm sure you can guess what happened next. The police arrived to find John gone and his brother in law in serious condition. John ran through some corn fields and the police were able to follow his path by the blood trail he left behind. John's brother in law was air lifted to a hospital in Chicago, we live about 50 miles south of Chicago, and John was taken to a local hospital for stitches to his head. Then he was arrested. He was charged with a DUI, reckless driving, driving in the wrong lane, and leaving the scene of an accident which is a felony. He spent the entire Christmas Day in jail and was released on bail Monday morning. He then had to go to court to ask permission to leave the state as he lives in Kentucky since graduating from college. John's brother in law is going to need surgery to fix his pelvic bone and will not be able to work for many many months. Needless to say my son is very upset by all of this. And if anything good can come out of this very bad situation it is a lesson learned. I'm sure by many of John's friends I hope but certainly by both my son's as we had a long talk about this. Both my son's admitted to me that they have driven while drinking when they certainly should not have. They both have assured me that they will never drive again while drinking nor will they get in a car where the driver has been drinking. They will call me, I don't care if it's 3 in the morning I will go get them, as will my husband. Or they will call a taxi or uber. I can only hope this lesson learned will stay with them for the rest of their lives. I can only hope and pray that it will.

Sometimes the decisions some make aren't the greatest especially when drunk. It could have been more nasty but ultimately glad they're alive and didn't drag anyone innocent to the situation. I don't drink so I'll be happy to be a designated driver. I'm happy to hear your sons admited what they have done wrong in the past and due to this incident that hit close to home and involved their friend, they will never drive after drinking!

@infatuatedbby His aunt is his lawyer and she says this is his first DUI so a hefty fine is what he will probably get. They have already dropped the felony leaving the scene as he panicked had a head injury and was trying to get help.

My two learned that and they used to take it in turns to drive the Car and not drink so that the others could have one or two. A lot of Police Stops here so you can be stopped anytime for things that you might not even have thought of. But now they do not drink at all which is even better but they learned lessons as well like getting sick and after a time they thought it was not worth it.

@fishtiger58 There comes a time when they do stop believe me. I was fed up with their goings out and coming back in like that as well but it all faded out when they decided that is was not for them anymore. I tried too maybe too hard I tried so I just let go I had to. All their Friends did exactly the same thing and stopped as well. They must have had Union Meeting and decided for an all out strike on that kind of way of doing things.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Sounds like perhaps the police in Spain are stricter than here in the US. I hope you have a wonderful new year as well.

I wish my son's didn't drink but it's nothing I can stop, so as long as they don't drive I have to live with it.

I'm so sorry for John's brother-in-law. That's going to be a huge blow to him if he can't work for several months and I hope he learned his lesson as well. Sometimes it takes something like that for it to sink in that you shouldn't drink and drive. I'm glad your boys both swore not to do so.

Yes it is a hard way to learn a lesson but I bet John wishes he had learned that lesson before all this happened. He probably never gave it much thought that night when he got behind the wheel because he probably did it many times before and made it home. Now he will pay for the for a very long time to come. I hope his brother in law makes a full recovery. I am glad you sat down and talked to your boys. I, too, hope this is something they will remember as a lesson for the rest of their lives.

John is a good kid, I have known him since he was a very young boy. I hate this happened but I hope he and my boys and all their mutual friends learn from this most awful situation. I'm sure he didn't give it a thought when he got behind the wheel, now he most certainly will.

A friend of my son's was killed after doing some drinking, he was killed right in front of his father's house. Both he and his brother heard the crash..It was devastating for all concerned. I was very, very sad about it. I did not know the kid..but my son knew him well..and all I could think was that he could have been with him..!!

What a horrible thing to happen but thankfully they didn't hit another car and kill someone. My kids don't drink and drive, but I can say that because they don't drink. I am so glad your son wasn't with them and I hope they recover quickly. Hopefully they won't drink and drive again either.

Sometimes bad things have to happen before one can learn a lesson. I will be forever grateful my son stayed home that night. John is a really good kid, and I'm so happy he was not injured to badly. His brother in law will make a full recovery. I hope John, my sons and their many friends all learn a lesson from this. My son is in Canada for New Years with some friends. But he told me they rented a cabin or something like that and the plan is to stay there and party. So I hope that's true. My son was pretty shaken up about this accident so I think he will do his partying at the cabin, and not go out except for dinner.

Exactly drunk drive leads to demolish. Specially in these Xmas seasons there are many accidents by the drunken drivers. In one of the recent discussion I have shared the same experiments with friends.

one good thing about a cell phone he will have a record of trying to call for help and should get the leaving the scene dropped hopefully he has learned his lesson but sadly that is not true for most who drink and drive and get in an accident usually those who end up killing someone have had several accidents before hand :(

You are so right, if the laws don't clamp down they will keep drinking and driving. John did get the leaving a scene dropped he was trying to get help. But he will still have to deal with the drunk driving

My husband and I don't drink. I wish my sons didn't but they are grown men, so I can't do anything about that. But if they learned a lesson that is the most important thing for them. John and the brother in law will recover from their injuries.

I am sorry this has happened to a friend of yours. I'm glad they hit trees and not another vehicle with people in it.. as more injuries would have been caused! I'm also glad they're not more severely injured! My son is 19.. and although isn't legal drinking age yet, I know he has tried drinking a few times already. I've always told him about the dangers of driving drunk, or riding with someone who is drunk. I tell him that I'm okay with him calling me at any hour of the night for a ride.. I'd rather do that than have him ride home with someone who has been drinking.

I agree I will go any where any time to get my sons and keep the safe when they choose to go out drinking. Nothing I can do about them drinking they are adults, but this was a hard lesson to learn. We were all pretty scared when we first heard about the accident.
