Loss of a Pet

Today I had to say goodbye to my buddy for the past 12 years. I knew it was going to be hard, but I am taking it harder then I expected. I lost my son 3 years ago, and today I lost the last part of my family. I feel lost and am just very emotional. I know it's only been 5 hours since I had to let him go, he had bone cancer and was in a lot of pain. But I feel torn, I know he is no longer hurting and it was the right thing to do, we've prolonged his life as much as humanly possible, it wasn't the expense but it was that there was just nothing left to try to ease his pain. I can't stand being at home and I don't have anyplace to go, he was a constant part in my life, he went to work with me every day, and no matter what room I was in he would never leave my side. I never really understood the reality of this complete feel of loss, I have co-workers that went through it over the past 2 years, and I didn't really understand until today. It's true that you can't understand what you go through until this happens to you. I said I wouldn't get another dog after this, it's just to hard to handle the loss, but I am torn between yes and no every 10 min it seems.
