Faking It

I'm not a complainer nor a whiner, but I have a nasty head cold and feel weak. I've been ill since the night before New Year's Eve.
Today I have to fake being well. I must pull myself together and gather my strength. Our sister-in-law expects us to pick her up from the airport and take her out to dinner as we do every year.
Have you had to drag yourself out of a sickbed to carry on with your day?

Yes I do it all the time at work. I remember last winter I had a flu that lasted 3 weeks. I took 2 days off and I had to work the right of the time while I was so sick. It was not fun at all.Enjoy your time with your sister-in-law and I hope you feel better soon.

Well anyway you both look great even if you were feeling ill. I have had to fake it today too as there is a tummy bug going round and I have had a bit of that but have not complained as I had to go to the Shops as its the Three Kings Day tomorrow and all is closed its a National Holiday you see.

@lovinangelsinstead21 I hope yours is just a 24 hour bug. Those are so nasty and aggravating. At least you completed your shopping. Have a good holiday and feel much better!

Oh yes I've dragged myself out a few times for planned schedules. I hope by faking it you do actually get better when you pick up your sister in law and have dinner :)

Every time I get sick, I have to find a way to drag myself into work and function throughout the day. I could take sick days, but for every day I miss work, it takes me three days to catch up. It's much easier on me long-term to suck it up and go to work sick than to miss a day and try to play catch-up.
Hope you feel better soon!

@DianneN It's very rare that I ever get so sick that I can't function. But, like you said, when I get that bad, I feel like I'm on my deathbed. In those rare cases, I will take time off from work. But, thankfully, it doesn't happen often.

@moffittjc Men usually seem healthier to me and don't get ill as often as women, so it seems to me.

When I'm sick, I'm sick, and usually in bed on antibiotics, sleeping away the day. I couldn't go to school like that. Sure, the work piled up, but I didn't care enough to let it get the best of me. I had pretty good subs, too.
Thank you! I'm feeling 99% better today.

@DianneN Hopefully I've taken care of the stuffy part. When I was doing laundry today the gal who works there mentioned a humidifier. Just having a teapot on the stove is putting moisture in the air so I hope that keeps me unplugged tonight and not so dry going forward.
I'm glad you're feeling better.

If i were in your place , i won't fake it . I will just ask to be excused and just stay in bed to rest .
But anyway , is that the picture of you and your sister-in-law during the dinner ? Your smile showed you are not well , my friend .
Anyway , at least , you were able to still pull yourself that smile and go out for dinner , my friend .
I hope by now you are okay already .

that's pretty much the story of my life .. faking being well ... I have fibromyalgia which I managed to ignore for nearly 20 years now .. We women, are very good at faking when it comes to our health ...
Lovely photo you have there!

@DianneN ahahah!.. I am on of the millions of queens of faking it .. and yes indeed, fibro is like having a tooth constantly aching but no dentist would dare pull it .. very depressing at times...

@LadyDuck I don't know how you managed to eat dinner, even in beautiful Monte Carlo! Would you believe I felt better once I got out of the house? But by the time we got home, I was exhausted. I felt a lot better today, but overdid it, so now I'm resting.

I know when you get mid way of being well from the cold or days in being in the house and then coming outside when it is sunny makes you feel better.

I think every single one of us faces such kind of situations. But one should know how to tackle such scenarios, for instance in your case if your sister in law is expecting you to pick her up from airport, just tell her that you aren't well and you won't be able to pick her up. Instead arrange a cab or Taxi for her. Why am telling you that is, no matter how hard you try to fake, in front of your family, faking wont last longer, as families knows us inside out.

I'm sorry that you haven't been feeling well. It's not easy when you have to get out of bed, when you're sick. It's not something that I like doing, but I still have kids to take care of and take to daycare and such. As a mom, you don't get sick days. Even when you're sick. I can relate.

Quite often I hae to do that too. Thing is I have never even managed to get to bed but sit around moping feeling miserable to go with it.
More than once I have had to do just that carry on and soldier on like nothing has happened plus listen to the other complain of silly things.

Oh no - you have to entertain on top of being sick! Well I hope that being out and about actually makes things better (sometimes it makes me feel better). Having young kids - and with Hubby out for work from early til late, I have to hold the fort no matter what . . . we rarely cancel any of their activities over "me" . . . I just keep on going because I have to .

@DianneN I'm glad that getting out of the house actually made you feel better! I think we literally have to pretend we are well . . . so maybe we're just tricking our bodies into actually becoming well . It is difficult to be sick when you're a mom, but that's why women are so super !

I hope it is not something serious like pneumonia. Back when my younger son was 5, I had a sickness that would not let go of me. After a week of a fever and feeling like crap and starting to get a cough, (while taking care of my kids and the house), my husband said I should go to the doctor. I did and she determined I had Walking Pneumonia. I was put on an Antibiotic and could hardly get out of bed.
So, even though you have to be there for your relatives, just try to take it easy. I hope it is not a cold that could lead to something worse.

I hope you're feeling better, and that you were able to enjoy your time with your SIL.
Because of the arcane way our district requires us to find our own substitutes when we call in sick, there have been many mornings I've decided it would just be easier to push through the day than spend the morning making phone calls looking for a sub.

@DianneN You wouldn't believe what we have to do now. After we call our sub, we have to go online and fill out a request for that sub in one program. The program then sends the sub a notification that they have to answer whether or not the accept the job. Once they accept, we have to go into a different program and request the sick day, and include the name of our sub. Then we're supposed to e-mail a sub plan to our team leader for them to give the sub when they get there, because our emergency sub plans are only supposed to be used if we are incapacitated and cannot find our own sub and write plans for them. It is just easier to go into work sick.

@DWDavis OMG! I can't even imagine doing all that when ill with a fever, flu, etc. I think I'd rather go to school, too, and be good for nothing all day. Who knows? The students may all get sick and stay home, so I could curl up in a ball on my desk and sleep.
