What Your Camera Sees but Your Eyes Don't....

Canada
January 5, 2017 6:15am CST
When I empty my camera on to my computer, I usually check the photos and delete the ones that I decide are not worth saving. I almost deleted the photo above that has that blue line in it... Did you notice the blue lines? I almost deleted them but at the last moment I realized what it was... I had gone out to take care of some of my end of the years art business and when I got near the winery I was visiting, the fog was awesome. Down below on the highway it was misty and raining, but up on the mountain (escarpment) you couldn't see 10 feet in front of the car. Still raining but a white out of fog. I turned into the winery on a dirt service road so I could get some photos. The blue lines in the forest next to the winery are plastic tubes, tapped into the maple trees so the sap can travel to the boilers that will change the sap into Maple Syrup. The sap will run in the spring when winter is over but they put up the tubes in the fall when its comfortable to do that. I didn't even noticed the tubes when taking the photo. The second photo is looking out the drivers side of my car, a field of newly planted (last spring) grape plants. On a normal day you can see the beautiful buildings that holds the Winery behind this field. The third photo I took when I got home, standing in the rain looking down into the ravine in my backyard noticing that white line which is the stream that travels through the ravine when it rains. The orange/red color of the ravine is because its full of dead leaves right now At home the fog was noticeable but it certainly wasn't heavy like it was up on the escarpment and in the forest photos I hardly see it at all... Have you ever heard of an escarpment? We call it a mountain but it goes for miles. I live on the escarpment.

@marlina Yes, that is probably right, when my husband wanted to take a job offer in Canada, we wondered what it would be like, but it first got us out of Kansas and closer to our families in NY and Mass...and we have never looked back. Love living here in Ontario.

The bottom picture looks familiar, have you used it here or on bubblews before? I think all three of the shots are totally kooool. Well, I'd heard the word used before but now I understand what it is, thanks for that.

Did you take an earlier pic of the wreath @PainsOnSlate ? It looks so familiar.

Not this photo, I just took it the day of the fog but if you see one, you see them all, The ravine is very deep and steep, to get to the bottom I go up the street to the top and there is a hiking trail through the ravine. I've seen deer, foxes, raccoons and a few other wild things in the ravine while walking the trail. The trail is part of the trails on the escarpment. I live half way up the escarpment. And that wreath I put on a tree years ago, Eventually it will fall apart but so far - its doing great.

@rebelann And from my kitchen window I can see hikers using the trail at the bottom of the ravine. I've also seen kids trying to kill themselves on skies in the winter... I say kill themselves because of the huge rocks (boulders) they could run into. It would make a bumpy ride on skis.

I saw the blue tubes right away, but I didn't know what they were until I read your discussion. They tap the maple trees in our area also, but I've not seen a pipe system like that rigged up. The views of the escarpment are spectacular where ever you catch a glimpse of them. Last summer we were up near Wasaga Beach and saw the other end of the escarpment, it got us to pull the car over and get out and enjoy the view and snap a picture.

@stbrians The Niagara Escarpment is very steep and made of rock, there isn't much opportunity to climb it.

@Juliaacv I was in Wasaga Beach last summer too, it was fun to see snow still on the mountains. It was a lovely place to visit - my husband was fishing and I was sightseeing...

@stbrians @Juliaacv that is right the sights are breathtaking and there is a hiking trail from one end to the other. I've hiked the Bruce Trail often in my area but have never been on it up north. The town of Grimsby where I used to live has a trail to the Bruce trail so you can get up and down almost every where from the escarpment. Our escarpment is rock and is steep but also beautiful to hike on. My first time there was with my boys in scouts and I hiked with them but they stayed over night....

@marlina I was surprised when they started using plastic tubes but it certainly makes the job easier. I miss seeing the taps dripping in the metal buckets. Although most of our Sugar bushes demonstrate the history. Most interesting was how the natives made syrup in a cut out log with hot rocks...

I didn't notice the blue lines at first - they make the photo interesting when you know what they are. I thought an escarpment was a ridge on a mountain, but I've never seen one.

Ours is the edge of a mountain but behind it it's flat all the way to Lake Erie on the level top of the escarpment. its hard to explain but so interesting when experiencing it.

Indeed our cameras can see more than our eyes could. This is my first time to know about those blue lines and glad that I learned something new from you today. Thank you.

You are very welcome. The plastic tubes are fairly new, (just a few years) We used to see big metal pails hanging off the trees catching the sap.

I have stopped taking pictures. I cannot seem to get them to turn out the way I want them. I put away my camera and if it comes out, it is because I am handing it to someone else to use.

You are welcome, it gives us beautiful views, When I first moved here I was told the escarpment was originally the edge of Lake Ontario which is right below us and to a degree it is the truth but in fact it was per-historic and the water was massive not just lakes.

Its lovely here and quiet if you are far enough away from the major highway and I am. From the top of the escarpment the views are breathtaking. We can see Toronto across Lake Ontario.

@PainsOnSlate I'm sure you take the time to appreciate the beauty of the area. It is easy for me to forget how lucky I am to live here. In particular people remark on the brightness of the stars but I rarely think about them. I try to consciously appreciate such things now.

I like the second photo. It reminds me of winter. And what land looks like after being ravaged by war, just like on the war footage from WWII on the history channel.

The photos are great. I know what you mean by the camera seeing what I don't. I fish and have taken many many photos of the Great Blue Heron, but have never been able to get a shot of a Green Heron. One day while out fishing a Blue Heron was posing for me so I took a bunch of shots. When I got home standing behind the Blue Heron on a log was a Green Heron I was so excited I never saw him when I was taking the shots.
