Say what, choosing a song by an animated group that never existed in reality. I loved this song when young. I watched “The Archie Show” on Saturday mornings and cut out the “record” from the back of the Sugar Crisps cereal box. “Sugar Sugar” was written by rock and roll hall of famer Jeff Barry and Canadian singer Andy Kim who enjoyed the #1 “Rock Me Gently” in 1974. Studio magicians were hired and Ron Dante sang lead. Producer Don Kirschner pushed the song hard to the top of the charts in the US and UK. “Sugar Sugar” finished as #1 song of 1969. You can laugh at the greatest bubblegum song of all time but I have a fondness for “Sugar Sugar” which still sounds pretty good.
"Sugar, Sugar" is one of 16 animated music segments created to be shown on "The Archie Comedy Hour" on CBS-TV in 1969, and the song is included on The Archie...

The only laughing I will do here is when I listen to the Archies, I love their music (animated band or not). The music was incredibly light, fun and playful. Would that we had more of that in our 'modern era'.

Yep, I remember listening to pop music at rest time at summer camp. WLS out of Chicago. We could pick it up in Southern Michigan. Incense Peppermints...Gotta Get a Message to You...One is the Loneliest Number...B-tch Gonna Set Me Up, Or Am I Just Paranoid? Kidding about the last one. A 9-year-old kid client turned me on to that one.

I love this song and find it impossible not to sing along with, which is slightly awkward when I'm at the office.

I had this pegged as the #1 song, and there really could be no other. Even as much as I love "Sugar on the Floor" (a Kiki Dee song) nothing tops the Archies.
BTW, "Rock Me Gently" was Andy Kim. You can't believe how many people think that's Neil Diamond!

Andy Kim had a successful run. Baby I Love You was another big hit.

I still haven't gotten my speakers hooked up to my computer after moving it from one desk to a newer one. So, I'll have to listen to that later. Is it the one that goes something like this, " Sugar, ah honey, honey, you are my candy girl..."? If so, I never knew that it began from an animated series. My husband would probably have known that but not me.

Being lightweight is why it is the greatest of all bubblegum songs.

@msiduri (Looking at you with intense eyes and swirly thingie going in circles) You will sing I Am Woman all day. It will not leave your mind. Can you feel the melody? Can you hear the words? I am woman. Her me roar. In numbers to great to ignore. Buwaahaahaa!

I never cared much for Sugar Sugar, but I did like My Heart Went Bangshangalang, which I think was buy the same fictitious group. Ah, the guilty pleasure of youth. Random confession: I preferred Archie Comics to Superman and Spiderman. That doesn't make me...un-cool...does it?
