When Cultures Collide

It has been challenging loving a person of another country because aside from having different languages, culture also plays a big role. What seems okay for me might not be okay for him and vice versa. Because of that, communication is vital for without it, a relationship between two different cultures is impossible.
This day, the wall between us and mom was finally mended. I talked to my mom and to my boyfriend. This morning, the three of us reached an agreement to avoid any problems again in the future.
I want also to give thanks to all mylotters who were with me during those painful days. Thank you very much!

So so happy you worked things out and you are a wonderful caring person to not be hurtful or angry with your mom- best to keep things as good as you can. What country is he from?

@JudyEv Thank you very much Judy! Yes, I am hoping for the same thing. I am glad that my boyfriend has been open minded as well when it comes to our cultural differences.

@annierose It is a great benefit if one of the two conflicting persons can be open minded and willing to wait while the other person gradually comes round to some sort of compromise.

@JudyEv It is really such a relief. Both my boyfriend and my mom don't know how to speak English much but, I appreciate how they were still able to communicate and understand each other despite the language difficulties.

We have a few in our family with different religions and cultures.. Initially we all wondered how this will pan out but we see their marriages are intact.

@allknowing I am glad that despite the differences, the relationship is still intact. I think it also depends on the person, do you think so?

@annierose If one of them gives in no matter which partner things become easy and that is how. I think these things can be managed. We have 5 such marriages and all are doing fine.

@LadyDuck It was difficult but when an e-mail was sent to me scheduling me for a skype interview abroad, I decided that my mother should know it. That became the reason I got the courage to talk to her.

@allen0187 Thank you allen! I am hoping for the same thing. We already know what we did wrong and try to compromise to be careful next time so as not to hurt other's feelings.

It is a difficult thing, but could be made easier with all realizing their place in the relationship.

@neersha I agree. It does really happen but I think that a bigger adjustment is needed if a relationship happens between people raised in different countries.

Its really tough to have a relationship with someone with different culture. When the family of the someone is traditional or your own family is, its gonna be a big factor in the relationship. You're very lucky to find someone open-minded and that could meet you in the middle. good luck!

@diosabella Thank you. Yes, it is something very challenging. In the Filipino culture, it is not only the woman whom the man should please but also her family. It is not the culture of my bf's country. For our relationship to work out, we really do some adjustments.
