Starting a new book and a reading goal

I decided a few days ago that a good goal for me would be to finish reading one book each week. I needed to finish the book I was reading by the 7th but I didn't have time. I stayed up until midnight last night and finally finished it. The book I was reading was called "Ninteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult. At the end of that book they created a spot on the school grounds dedicated to the students who were murdered and it was named A Safe Harbour. I had a book on my shelves by Danielle Steel called "Safe Harbour" so I chose that to read next. I want to finish it by the 14th so I will be in line with my goal of one a week.

That sounds like a worthy goal. Aren't your worried that some books might not be able to be read in a week though? I would never make it. I guess I would rather watch TV or Netflix than read. I am enamoured of anything with a screen. It has to be a really good book for me to do that instead. If you like funny books, try the Shopaholic series, they are hysterical.! I like mystery, horror and suspense, but I also love a good comic read.

I didn't care much for the 3 or 4 shopaholic series books I read by Sophie Kinsella. I like watching movies but only if I have someone to cuddle with. I figure like this past week there will be times I will not be able to finish a book in 7 days so then I will read a shorter book the next week and finish two bringing my total to where it should be.

That sounds like a really great goal. This year I really want to read more as well. I don't know if I can read one a week, but I want to read more than I did last year.

Whoa, these are pretty thick books, right? That is amazing, I don't have that kind of time, but I would love to have more time to read.

I stay up too late to make time then I'm exhausted each morning. Nineteen Minutes was 455 pages. It took me 8 days to read it. I want to finish one every 7 days so I need to catch up.

One book a week is an achievable goal. What type of books are your favorite reading?

I enjoy reading pretty much anything but my favorites are probably mystery or horror. I have certain authors who are my favorites but I don't know what genre they are. The authors are Jodi Picoult, Nora Roberts and Danielle Steel.

@DWDavis That is a fitting description for Jodi Picoults I think! I did see on your profile that you are a published author of Young Adult books. My daughter and I both enjoy some of those. I like ones geared towards teens such as Twilight and Harry Potter and Pretty Little Liars. How many books have you had published?

@shaggin All three are very good, and productive writers. Danielle Steel insists that what she writes is in the genre Women's Fiction, and that she's not a romance author. Nora Roberts reportedly does not like being assigned to a genre. Jodi Picoult describes her novels as Ethical and Moral Fiction. I write novels about young people in middle school learning life's lessons in love, friendship, loyalty, loss, and heartbreak. I am considered a Young Adult novelist who pens coming-of-age romantic stories.

They are stand alone books. I don't recall any of hers being in a series. She is one of my favorite authors I've read probably 20 of her books over the years!

That is great you have read both books :-) On the first page of Safe Harbour the girl has a chocolate lab. That is what my boyfriends puppy is. I thought that was another sign this is the right book for me to be reading.

That would be interesting - to use each book to trigger what you'll read next.

It just kind of worked out that way. I am curious to see what the next book will be after this. On the first page of Safe Harbour the little girl has a chocolate lab. That is what my boyfriend has so I think this book was definitely calling to me :)

Same here. I really need to do more online to earn some extra money this year but I want to relax as well so I am setting this goal to take a break and relax more.

@shaggin I do understand...I do have times I give everything a break and just grab my book but because I have set an online goal for this year ($$$) I am working towards it as well.

I do not set goals about the number of books I want to read. I usually read in the evening before sleeping and I never stay up late.

I do online things in my free time to earn a little extra money. My book shelves are over filled with books so I need to set a goal to force myself to relax and read.

I am going to have to pick up my own pace to stay steady at a book a week. Somehow there's a sluggish period following New Year's.
