They wash their own clothes.

I have 5 children ranging in ages from 12 to 18 and I make them wash their own laundry each kid gets a different day of the week. And they wash their own dishes after dinner. I do clean but I want all my kiddos reliable and to be able to do their own clothes and dishes and not have to depend on no one. Any thoughts?

I think that is wonderful. I would love it if someone would teach my brother to do that as well. Oh wait, my parents taught him to do it many years before I was born. Apparently over the years he forgot how to do it. I do think it is imperative to teach children how to properly care for themselves. They will not always live with us ... or at least most of them won't ... and it is our responsibility as parents to give them the life skills necessary to thrive.

@Babs0630 I am the youngest by far, but somehow it is my responsibility to take care of him, even though I have my own actual children to raise.

I totally agree. Kids should pitch in and be responsible for their own clothes, dishes, etc. That's great! I bet, if they think about it later in life, they will thank you for doing this.

It's nice that they have responsibilities and help you with the housework. Otherwise it would be impossible for you to do everything for everyone, especially since you have a big family! I think that children should learn from a young age to take responsibility, and gradually be able to support themselves as they grow up.

@Babs0630 It's always an advantage in life to have the skills to support ourselves and be independent.

Seriously, what did they do? How did they function? I'm curious how people get by with out knowing how to cook or wash their clothes?

I admire your parenting skills. When I'll have my own children in future, I intend to do the same. Make them do chores at an early age.

I think that is a great idea. It is good to teach them responsibility at a young age. They will thank you for the independence when they get out on their own. You are their mom, not their maid. You are doing a great job!
