It's time for another "day" song to compliment the "night" song in my series of favorite "day and night" songs -- songs with either day or night in the title. And, for today's "day" song, I have the irony of ironies.
#6: Days Gone Down (Still Got That Light in Your Eyes) - Gerry Rafferty
What's the big irony? The album this comes from is called NIGHT Owl!!!
Some time ago I did a series about acts who were not "one-hit wonders" despite the fact that everyone only knows one song by them. One of the top acts on that list was Stealer's Wheel. Everyone remembers "Stuck in the Middle With You," but few people remember that "Star" also made the top 40.
Gerry Rafferty was the lead singer of Stealer's Wheel, and he suffered a similar fate. Although he had three hit singles from his masterpiece album City to City, people only remember "Baker Street." And yes, he had a follow-up album (several, actually), but they've all be relegated to "his other stuff" at the expense of "Baker Street."
That includes this song, which was the initial single from his follow-up album to City to City. It's a great song but it didn't have the catchy saxophone...and by 1979 everyone was singing along with "My Sharona" and basically ignored this song.
Rafferty had serious alcohol problems (he referenced it in this song: "spaced out rather drunk...one more bottle dead and a new day just begun") and died in 2011 from liver failure. He left behind much more than two songs.

And another extremely underappreciated guy. There's more to it, of course, but I've always liked his voice.

Baker Street and Stuck in the Middle are all I am familiar with.
