Have you read fairy tales since you grew up?

I often read fairy tales and have found that most of them have two readings. One is for the children and the other, more subtly, for the grown ups. All of the tales form the 1000 an 1 nights were intended only for grownups and only lately they were changed to suit a child´s mind. Do you still read some of them? Do you find something you did not see when you were young?

Fairy tales can be scary. For instance, in Cinderella the stepmother cuts a goodly portion of her daughter's foot off in order to try to fit the glass slipper on it. Another tale, The Goose Girl, details a horse being butchered alive and its head mounted on a gate where the little goose herd converses with it every day. Of course, our mothers read us sanitized versions of fairy tales just as I did for my own children. I have been reading fairy tales the past few years just for fun. One that I remember from childhood that wasn't rewritten for children was The Blue Light--the bad guy in that story was turned into a spaniel and could only eat hot coals.

These sound pretty scary even for an adult! For this adult anyway.

I've never read any of these, even as a child. I'll have to look them up.

They are interesting and they are clearly not for children if you read the whole story.

I've seen the new movie versions of some of the old fairy tales, but I guess I really should read some of them in their original form. I just wish I could find time to read half the things I want to.

Movies change the old fairy tales in something that is only suited for small children. But real fairy tales show the wisdom of each culture.

@marguicha I don't think that's always true about movies. Some of the newer ones are quite scary. Perhaps they don't have all the wisdom of the originals but I'n not convinced that the ones I've seen would be suitable viewing for young children.

Fairy tales! I really love them to remember those I read when I was a child and new ones. There are fairy tales for children and for adults. It's a wonderful trip to another world and we can learn a lot of those kind of books.

The fairy tales we read as children are adult tales when we read the unabridged tales.

Anderson wrote a lot of fairy tales. We all know by heart the more known ones, but there are others not so known. By the way, now we can read all of them online.

Yes, I read a lot of fairy tales when I was a child. These fairy tales come from my country and also some of them are the foreign ones. I think girls are especially interested in reading fairy tales. As to my son, he is interested in reading science books much more.

There are fairy tales that come from many countries. Every country has its own tales in which reality is changes to show a higher type of understanding.

I used to love some of the fairy tale books I had as a child. I really loved 'The Princess and The Pea' and 'The Magic Porridge Pot' stories. However, I was given an old Grimm Fairy Tales book which I found incredibly disturbing as there are lots of deaths and violence throughout. I ended up trying to re-write certain sections of the book as a child so the book, which I still have, has lots of horrible parts which are crossed out and replaced with happy things instead!

That´s one of the reasons why I said that some fairy tale books were for adults. Many fairy tales have a lot of violence and then they were changed so as to be literature for children.Life doesn´t always have happy endings all the time, as you know.

As I see, fairy tales are full of wisdom about reality and if we, as adults, go beyond the princes and the princess, there are many things to be learned.
