Both depends on what you're comfortable using. I have both of the high end models of those two brands but over the years, i've been more comfortable using an iPhone without any problem. I returned the exploding Samsung Note 7 Edge and got a Samsung Galaxy edge and gave it to my sister-in-law. Now i'm using an iPhone 7 plus.

iPhone cost is too overrated for its features. It has become a status symbol rather than a communication or multimedia device. While Samsung is too trying to copy apples's strategy with high priced devices. So, as a result a new company Xiaomi is eating into the share of samsung's market.

They don't really have a competition with each other. Apple has set its own benchmark and is purely devoted to deliver high quality product to end users.
As being an Iphone user, Iphone looks amazing and works a way faster than any samsung phone. but its is more prone to breaking and its repair could cost you near about $150.
Apart from it, Apple is a good thing to invest in.
