How Far Will You Commute to Work?

Yes, thats my question. How far are you willing to commute to work? And how far do you? I was thinkong about this as I saw a job posting for something in my field (but normal hours) but it is in a suburb which is 25 miles away from my city. This is bordering pretty far for me, so I cant decide if I should actualy apply. Factoring in bad weather and traffic, the commute could take over an hour. But a lot of people do this. Some of my coworkers live over 50 miles away from our job. Right now I live about 5 miles away so the commute is quick and I dnt even have to take a highway. Which is nice. What about you though? How far do you commute to work? And how far are you WILLING to commute?

That would be too far for me. The furthest away I ever had to travel was 15.8 miles.

I think too far for me as well. I like being only a few miles from home!

@maezee We live in the suburbs where there are no businesses except for the police, volunteer fire department, town hall, church, synogogue, and elementary and high school. I didn't want to work at the schools in our small town.

Here in India residential areas and offices are in different places which means we have to travel miles to get to our work place. I had organised a special bus for those who were in my vicinity to get to offices which were in onea rea. And this concept became a rule almost.

@allknowing Good. Likewise here in the city. Without a car a few suburbs would be challenging.

I drive half an hour to get to work. I have a couple coworkers that drive an hour. I think half an hour or less is reasonable. Anything going on an hour is a bit much.. But it depends on the job and the situation. My husband once got transferred to a store 2 hours away, and we did not want to move, so he made that drive everyday. Thankfully it didn't last long before they transferred him back. You could at least apply for the job.. you don't know if you'll get it or you can always say no if you change your mind later.

If I were an employee, I would choose a job that's near my home about 5-10km away.

Yes. That seems more reasonable. As long as there is a job available that close!

@maezee yep but my company is located about 15km away and since it's my own and the office is situated in a strategic place, can't complain.

I know that personally I wouldn't commute for more then about 20 minutes. My husband did a 20 minute commute for over 25 years, and I know first-handed how stressful this can be, road conditions, replacing your car because of high mileage, frequent oil changes, new tires......

All very good points. I didnt even think of the part about your car and putting miles on it.

@maezee And I don't know about in your country, but up here, if you drive a certain distance then your auto insurance goes up. I never drove more then 10 minutes, but my husband has always been the bread-winner and he drove longer than I had to.

Longest commute I've ever had was around 50 miles each way so 2 hours travelling. Currently I take 6 minutes to get to work and like it way more this way If I found a job that paid well I'd travel a long way but it would have to be a practical distance. It'd be very time consuming for me to commute to somewhere like London every day. Doable but not practical.

Nice. Glad you found something close. I feel we alreadt spend too much time at work or away from home as it is without an extra long commute.

5 miles.anything over that cuts into the joke of a pay rate we have around here. it's just not worth it.i'd do 25 if the rate were higher.

All the jobs my father ever had besides the last one were at least 30 miles away. There are very few jobs nearby. I worked at the hospital in town for two years and the furthest I had to travel was 11 miles when I lived in the country for a few months.

At my last job the commute was quick maybe 6 miles if that. Way back though I can remember driving to a call center 5 days a week and it was 55km of driving I think. So there and back...110km :|

Mine isn't very far away. I want to say it's about seven miles away. I wouldn't want to work anywhere that would take me more than 20 minutes to get to and from home.

I think so too. Work is exhausting enough without having to endure an hour drive home. What if the job offered you more money?

@maezee It might be something I would endure then, but then the job would have to be something I could tolerate as well.

It took me a half hour to get work when I worked but an hour to get there if it snowed.

When I was younger and we lived in San Diego, the commute was long. I didn't mind. When I moved back here to Wisconsin, with my kids now grown, my commute was less than 15 minutes, and the last commute about five. I think at my age that would be the most I would want to commute. Now that I'm retired, I don't worry about commutes.

I work from home now but if I do have to go out to work I would always prefer a closer destination from my home.
