How easy is it to get a doctors appointment where you live?

United Kingdom

Getting a doctors appointment around here is no easy task, I made one and have had to wait nine days. I know doctors are under a lot of pressure but I do think that is a little bit ridiculous. Is it quick or easy to get an appointment where you live?

No not at all. I don't even have a doctor because of the doctor shortage where I live and if you do have a doctor it takes about two to three weeks to get an appointment with them. You are better off going to the ER but then you could have a 6-7 hour wait.

It depends on what kind of doctor I am seeing and the reason. Usually it is to the family practice and I only have to wait a day or two until they can get me in.

If you are really sick tey want you to go to the emergency room and that costs you a lot of money.

I can often get an appointment the same day for something immediate. Have to book ahead for an annual physical

Well, I think if you have money (wich is not my case, haha)... There's no problem. Otherwise, it's not so easy.

We are very lucky to have the NHS, I can't imagine how difficult things would be without it,

It depends what type of doctor. Here in Italy the GP is free. Mine holds surgery every day from 2 p.m. for 2 hours (in the block of flats opposite mine) and visits on a first come first served basis. You go, without an appointment, and he visits everyone. I usually go at 1.30 and am within the first three people waiting. He arrives on time too. If however you need to see a specialist then that is a different story and the waiting time varies immensely.

It varies. I like to see a specific GP. In November I tried to book an annual review and was told nothing was available that month and that December's slots weren't showing yet on the computer. During early December I was busy but I tried again just after Christmas and was offered January 5, a whole range of times of day and single or double slots.

It is difficult for my husband to get an appointment with his doctor but mostly I can get in within a day or two.

@Clairelouiser I go to one in our nearest town 7 kms away while Vince's doctor is in our nearest city and about 20kms away.

I don't have a regular doctor so I don't know. The last few times I sought medical attention, I got in quickly enough.

It's easy. There are a lot of doctors nearby. If I can't make it to my doctor, I'll opt for another physician.
