Gear Up, Euro Up

Today while I had to take a cab from point A to B, I remember something I thought would be sharing with my friends here. Last june I happened to be in Istanbul. I took a taxi from the airport to the place I wanted to go, nice decent and friendly driver, I paid around 25 euros for the trip. The next the day I had to go back to the airport . So I got into the taxi just outside the hotel. By the time I reached halfway I found that the charge was already 25 euros. This made me quite suspicious and I tried to observe what's going on. I did find out that this man who appeared to be a gentleman, was doing something funny. Everytime he shifts his gear( manual car) he is pressing a button just down the meter , which makes the fare go higher. I thought for awhile what to do, being in a different country, running to catch the flight, I felt like I was pretty helpless. I ended up paying 45 euros while I arrived at the airport. I tried to convey my message to this man in a silent way while I was paying him. What would you have done in a similar situation?

Tough situation. Since you had to get to the airport and you were in a different country I too would have just paid the man. However if it had happened when I arrived and when he too me to the hotel I would have probably done some complaining and perhaps found some people to agree with me it that would have helped anything.

I guess I would have done the same since you don't want to get in an argument with a stranger in a strange place. However, if I could I would also report the driver to someone who would listen

Probably the same thing you did. However in my country the crime and violence is so high I'll count myself lucky to pay only 45 euros and get to keep my life. The only satisfaction I can think of is playing all kinds of scenarios where this man will get his due. Karma is a b*t*ch.
