onions express a gas when they are cut into that is actually toxic to the eyes so your eyes produce tears to clean it out so it doesn't stay in there. i learned that from video games haha

@snowdiamond If you don't the crying, there are special goggles you can wear when cutting onions.

It is actually the scent that stirs up our tear ducts. I have read that to avoid crying while cutting onions, you should rinse it with cold water, or just cover your nose with a noseclip. I have tried it, but i think it is worth a try if you are cuttig a lot of onions. Then you could tell us how effective it is.
