MyLot: a source of breaking news?

Perhaps it says something about how much time we can spend on here, or about how quick some members can be in posting topical discussions, but I often find that this site is where I first read about some big news stories.
They could be celebrity deaths, terrorist outrages or sensational statements by politicians; whatever they are, I saw them here first!
Has there been some big event which you first read about on myLot before catching it on the TV news?

I find a certain amount from Facebook but since starting on here I seem to spend far less time on there now.

We're a mini-CNN! Which means that Donald Trump won't talk to us.

I think that's definitely true for a lot of news from the far east. In fact there's a lot of stuff I wouldn't even know was happening if it wasn't for the people i follow on here. A lot of news tends to be buried away on UK news websites unless it has directly affected a UK citizen!

Yes, that well-used line from the news "A Britishman/woman was among the victims..."

@asfarasiknow Or more like " An earthquake in country X has killed over 500 people and destroyed over 10000 homes. A British man got a paper cut while writing a letter to the authorities complaining about the noise!"

I think we all talk about almost everything, I'm visiting you because you commented on my post about that scam... I do see lots of news here first before I see it in the papers or on TV...

@asfarasiknow we all spend too much time here. I read our local paper every morning before I come here...

I'm getting increasing amounts of news from here but perhaps that reflects how much time I am spending on here instead of reading often negative and depressing newspapers.

All the political news as well as celebrity deaths. I don't watch the news, but I get it just fine here. I even get the weather reports from all over the world, and sports stories as well. MyLot has it all. No need to watch it on TV.

@asfarasiknow So did I. I only knew him as the voice of the dragon on Merlin, but it was still a surprise to learn he was gone.

I find out about weather conditions faster on Mylot, then anywhere else. This means heavy rain, snow and unusually warm weather you will learn about here including when I posted we were over 90 degrees in November and people saw a photo of one of my waterlilies blooming in a season that is unusual.

I often read here that similar weather conditions to ours in the UK are present thousands of miles away. It's fascinating

I guess it depends which site you're on when the news breaks.

Not much of a TV fan, so many things are found on myLot first. When writing for Examiner (now closed) that was where much of my information came from. Not always correct, but interesting.

It's a very informative place and demonstrates how little is often covered by traditional. news media.
