The Trouble With Home Renovations

Last week my husband ripped the carpet off the basement stairs. He is now putting tile on the steps. The tile looks quite nice; it's the same as the tile we have on the main floor. But now I see how badly the walls and ceiling in the stairwell need to be painted.
I am dreading this job as the ceiling is very high in one section. And this should have been done first!
I find that is always the way. If we update one thing, I notice another glaring need.

That's right, we seem to want update per area in our homes, otherwise, like you said, its noticeable.
We haven't done anything here to our home in over 2 years, and its driving us crazy!
But, we had our house on the market and it just sold, so its no longer our problem.

Hire a painter! Our last home had 22 foot ceiling in the living area - no way my husband could paint that.

@DianneN I know. I would love to have someone tell us how to put this house together. My husband has some taste, I have none. He doesn't look at the whole thing though just the current project. My friends couldn't agree on redecorating. The designer helped them and she saved their marriage. lol

It is not ceramic tile. I don't know what it is called though. It is laid like tile and grouted. We have it in our kitchen. It is warmer than ceramic tile and not slippery. A friend has tile on the steps and I agree, it is slippery, and I didn't want that.

I put new flooring in the bedroom and, like you, only then noticed how badly the walls needed painting. Go figure.

That sounds about right! That's usually how most home renovation projects go. I hope you are able to figure out a safe way to paint that one high section without damaging any of that tile!

@paigea Do you have a ladder tall enough to reach the high spots? And who is going to spot him while he's up on the ladder? You? I hope he thinks it through carefully before moving forward. Remember, safety first!

@moffittjc He calls himself Mr. Safety. he worked for an oil company and every morning started with a safety meeting. But I have come to see that he is mostly noticing the safety breeches of others! The gutters need cleaning, he climbs on the roof! Which maybe that is okay for him but he does it when I am not even home!
We have one of those tall ladders with an extension. I will see if it is long enough. It certainly would be secure in the stair well but does not have a built in shelf for the paint. That can be addressed. If that ladder is not appropriate, we could rent something better. Some things he thinks through carefully, and others not so much.

Yes, it is always the case when you find the need to give attention to other things that needed repair or replacement.

Yeah I can see how that will happen. You get the nice brand new stuff in there, so, the things needing attention will be easier to spot after that. Just try to take it as you can, sometimes it is expensive too.

I hope you can enjoy the renovations you are able to do regardless.

I know exactly what you mean.. When we bought this house we didn't notice that a chandelier over the staircase is about 20 feet off the ground. Have no idea how we are going to replace bulbs!! As for your painting... I wonder if there are any extensions that could be attached to the roller??

Even the longest extension is not long enough for that area at the bottom of the steps. My husband thinks the big extendable ladder will work. But I am not climbing it and he is not getting any younger.
Any way, that is a problem for another day. Some chandeliers can be lowered to change light bulbs. I hope you manage to change your bulbs when the time comes!

@paigea - My mother used to say, "a house is never finished; by the time you finish one project, it is time to start another one." The older I got, the more I realized how true that is!
