A Dozen Songs I Loathe: #12 "I Don't Like Mondays" Boomtown Rats (1979)

This list is not about absurd songs like Paul Anka’s “Having My Baby” or picking on album cuts, covers and oddities. These songs are primarily critically acclaimed or major hits liked by the majority. To my ears, songs that grate the nerves and my hand immediately switches radio stations. I hate these songs! I never liked the Irish new wave band Boomtown Rats and groan when hearing the overly dramatic piano intro to “I Don’t Like Mondays.” On “The Fine Art of Sunrise” album, the song was a #1 in the UK and only #73 in the US. Lead singer/songwriter Bob Geldof based the song on a shooting spree at a San Diego playground by a 16-year-old girl. Her excuse was “I don’t like Mondays.” This liven sup the day. It is Geldof’s droning voice and overblown presentation sounding like a Broadway production number. Fortunately, “I Don’t Like Mondays” rarely plays on radio.

Aw man, I love Johnny Fingers' piano at the beginning.

I didn't like every new wave era song.

@JohnRoberts - Just out of curiosity, what did you think of Geldof's performance in The Wall?

@teamfreak16 It was good enough. It's not that I'm down on the Boomtown Rats just that I particularly dislike this song.

I never used to like it, but I've mellowed a bit since those days

Yeah, nothing perks up the day like a song about school children getting shot. Wasn't that album called The Fine Art of Surfacing here in the States? Like a change in a word in the title would help....

I can't say that I liked it, but I didn't turn the radio station when I came on. I remember the background of the song. No a topic I would have chosen to write about, nor present like this, I have to admit.

I kind of like that song, but that's what makes us different from everyone else, we all have our likes and dislikes.
