Do you think 'Spud' is a good name for a baby?

United States

Seriously....there is a family that I've known for 55 plus years...One of the kids has a daughter who is very pregnant..like she's due any day now with her first. What bugs me is the fact they call the baby 'Spud'. They have done that since she announced she was having a baby. I must be more old fashioned than I realized as I think this is a little weird referring to your baby as a potato. Her due date is the 26th so 'Spud' should be arriving soon. I pray they have a real name picked out and start using it soon! What do you think....is Spud a good name? Photo:pixabay.com/en/potato-vegetables-vegetable-food-1653301/

@AbbyGreenhill I hope they will not give him a silly name. Here people can change their name if the parents choose something that sounds silly or offensive.

@LadyDuck anyone here can change their name legally. So if they do name the kid Spud it could be changed.

I certainly hope that they will have a real name for the baby. Spud is absurd!

I pray they have a real name....Since they are Catholic I don't think the baby could be baptized with the name Spud.

That is a tacky name and hopefully they will give the baby a normal name. (hopefully, it is a silly little nick name at this point that will soon be discarded after the birth).

@AbbyGreenhill I agree, it is odd and annoying.

I think it is but it still annoys me that they would call an unborn baby that name.

@sallypup King Chuck rhymes with King Tut and that would get confusing!

As a nickname from doting parents it's wouldn't bother me, but not as a given name. Friends of ours called their baby, Percival Aloysius, my brother and his wife called their bump Philander. Their children have very normal names after birth.

I know Spud isn't a real name, but I still think it's not cool to refer to your child that way.....but that's me.

What a name! I'd hope it's not what they're using. I was watching a video about people naming their children recently, and it kind of bothers me that parents don't put more effort into naming a child, Spud is not a good name, neither is Koala, and Abcde. While I give people points for creativity, I think in logical sense parents need to think long and hard about a child's name. Such as Spud, there's so many ways a kid could get made fun of, or how many people would guess that Spud's name is some kind of nickname

Abcde...seriously? Thank goodness when they are old enough they can change them. I like 'normal' names!

I certainly hope they are just using spud as a nickname but have a real name picked out when the baby is born. But with all the crazy names kids have these days it wouldn't surprise me if spud was their name choice

No its an awful name that will cause him nothing but embarrassment his whole life. If that is just his nick name (I'm assuming its a boy) that will be fine as long as he has some normal birth name.

Good, I was worried there for a minute!! LOL. that family gives each other all kinds of name, that they use in public - like Pony is the father (his real name is Peter) I can't remember all of them.

@AbbyGreenhill The only really silly one I ever gave was Maynard to my niece, it just came out of my mouth when she was a little girl and it stuck, she is now 29 married and pregnant with her first.

Slightly unrelated to the topic, but my daughter was due 1/26/16 I had her a day early. But as far as Spud goes......maybe it's just a nickname? I hope. Maybe they want to name the baby in the moment. Who knows (:
