Time Has Wings

I was looking for a photo on my computer and discovered this one. It brought tears to my eyes.
Every year my sister and I took our children camping for a couple of weeks in the Adirondack Mountains in New York.
When we started my sister was divorced and my husband worked all summer so it was always two sisters, their young children, and their friends camping and having fun..
Now all of those children are grown up, my daughter is now the age I was in the photo.
Time does fly so take advantage of any and all fun things you can do with your family while you can.
From top to bottom – my son's best friend, two of my sisters girls under him, then my two boys in the middle. I'm behind the red hat, the dark haired girl is a niece of ours next to her is my sister's third girl. The three in the front is another niece of ours, the young boy a nephew of our two nieces and lastly my sister.
That's clear as mud, isn't it?
My daughter wasn't there – she was in University and had to work those summers.
Our Dad until he passed on, visited us at camp. He and my mother took us camping every summer as children. Thank you Dad and Mom!
Every camp has a picture of those who participated...
We still camp! Last year all of our children were there for a weekend. My sister's girls all have children, and those nieces (my brothers girls) still come up to spend a day with us when they can.
Hope I didn't bore you, I was just taking a trip back to summers long gone by.
Getting old is not easy but as long as we can we will continue to sleep in a tent and enjoy camping with our families..
Are you campers?

We still take hikes in the mountain while camping. I can't do the ones I did years ago but we have a few favorites that are do-able for me.

@PainsOnSlate I've told you before, my teenagers weren't thrilled... but teenagers are hard to please.. I do hope they'll begin to like it as they get older.

@katsmeow1213 We started with our kids when they were between the ages of 4 to 8 so they always thought it was a great adventure, I think if you continue to do it they will become comfortable and happy....Good Luck!

@PainsOnSlate My parents owned a summer home on the Chesapeake Bay - when they first got it no bathroom - but outhouse -one weekend of that was enough for me - I was in 8th grade - told them I wasn't going back until they had a bathroom put it. I don't need adventures, thanks.

Some of us love it and some of us don't, been doing it all my life and enjoy every minute, even the moments it rains on us and the bears show up... To each their own. Just think of all the adventures you have missed...

@PainsOnSlate It's a great tradition. I wonder how many generations you'll end up with that have participated.

My family as you know camped the whole time my sons were young. Now they have their own lives and don't camp. We always camped, fished, hiked, and would go sightseeing in the areas were were. As my kids got older they hated to camp and fish. Oddly enough they are now 24 and 25 and both separately have recently told me and my husband want to try fishing again, maybe camping is the next step. My hubby and I still go camping and fishing, but I have to admit the older I get the harder it is.

We go for two weeks which means we need cover in case it rains, Our tent is off to the side but our dry space is a pain to get it together...we went from a tarp to three pops up and it is easier than that tarp. I'm grateful my niece is helping us, once I get my surgery I should be able to handle it a lot better than right now.

@PainsOnSlate Camping is a wonderful thing to do, but it's not the easiest living one can do. You have to really love being in the great outdoors to enjoy it. Nothing better than that first cup of coffee, sitting at the campfire and listening to the fish splash and the birds chirping.

@fishtiger58 We love our camp because the river is shallow and the sound of the babbling hides any noise from any other camper. We noticed that when the kids were little and loud...We tried camping on a lake the year I couldn't get away for more than a few days so Elaine and the girls came to The Alleghenies in western NY It was gorgeous but you could hear someone sneeze 10 campsites away.... We don't fish but we watch those who do catch big ones our of the river.

I agree with you, we have run into so many who have never done that. My boys were in scouts too that taught them those necessary things, my daughter lasted one meeting in scouts and quit... but she is the best for wilderness camping now.

We have to thank the camera to bring back memories.
I have not camped but have gone on many holidays both home and abroad. I too keep looking at those photos and even just sit in my favourite corner and reminisce.

We love the fact we have to drive quite a ways to use a cell phone, the camp has a number and will give us messages...never used it until one of our camper friends ended up in the hospital she was fine and we breathed a sigh of relief when we heard her message.

We have talked about getting a pop up or a small camper but so far the tent is what we love, its harder to get set up because we are getting older, but one of my nieces comes and helps us now on set up day...

@paigea We just pee in the bush. We do walk to the washroom when needed..but we bought a porta potty two years ago so if its pouring rain now, we have a place to pee and not get wet...its a Coleman product with a plastic bag liner and cat litter...perfect...

@PainsOnSlate That is great she comes to help. My husband doesn't want to make several trips to the outhouse during the night. The bathroom is a big part of the reason we got the trailer.

I used to love camping..but at my age..I am no longer really interested in tent camping, and I have no one to go with. My ex wants to go..but he makes me crazy..and I am trying to stay away from him, not spend more time with him.

Hahaha! I love the Camp Insanity sign! What a wonderful photo @PainsOnSlate :) . Time really does fly. No, I love a comfortable bed too much to camp out for the night, but to spend a day out barbecuing by a lake can be lovely and relaxing.

@PainsOnSlate Years ago I slept on a cot like that. I guess it was too narrow cause I got a nasty back ache from the experience. Being out in nature at night, though. Sublime.

@sallypup Over they years we have had several, we started with out parents old canvas cots - not comfortable.. then we bought our own, wider and made our of a heavy duty fabric. We also bought the small air mattresses that are skinny and easy - no pump needed. Our cots are as comfortable as our beds at home, just not as big. BUT we don't have back problems so its easy for us...

We notice if its damp we ache but usually its dry and our cots keep us off the ground. Thanks for liking the photo, it touched my heart the other day while looking for something else.
